Thank you much, Mark! These two photos, so close as to make me cringe, show one way to do engraving. I get to do so little of this, that I've mislayed my gravers. Almost anything will work as long as it is sharp--really sharp.

Of course the real heroes in this art are those blokes who are engraving shotguns. Have you seen some of their work? Truly amazing.

Steve

Well of course, it's looking great!

The mighty thistle, well represented and I have soft spot for silver inlaid in guitars...and silver has always been popular in Scotland for ornamentation, Quaichs and the like...

I know that Rory Dowling of Taran guitars here in Scotland uses silver for his 't' logo...

I'll bet it's going to be a wee stoater!

I don't mean to bore anyone here, but I got this picture and thought I would share as I found it pretty cool as the inlay process has always fascinated me. Here shows the router work that was done to make this intricate inlay. In addition to all the curves and details, there are two different depths involved as the silver part was 0.02 inches thick while the MOP was 0.05 inches thick. Plus with you have to figure out how much to leave proud for sanding and I would think that the silver and MOP may not sand the same either....

I meant to ask Steve what he used for a router to do this, but forgot:

Final result again, Amazing job!!!

Complex job. Sure looks awesome. Guess they still have to slice thru fret 12 top and bottom again too. Betcha that is nerve wracking!

Jeez Dennis you make it sound so painful....I am sure it will be fine. Steve told me this would not fit into one fret, but I wanted it so badly that I gave the go ahead to span the multiple frets....On some of the renditions there is a sabre going through the top of the hearts anyway, so I am looking at that one and pretending it is the sabre....

So as mentioned above the guys did a mock up for me of some simple fret markers to go in between the main inlays. There was concern that it may be too busy, but for my eye they worked perfectly. For me they make a pathway for the inlays to flow and connect rather than just being 3 independent works of art. In that light, I gave the go ahead to add these markers:

Here they are just mocked up and laying on the fretboard. I wanted a simple Celtic cross design and that is exactly what they gave me. These are MOP with just pencil sketching on them in this photo...

And a little closer view:

And finally, here they are in final form, we went with a purple cross to tie in with the rest of the colors of the thistles. They are still just sitting on the fretboard, but should get inlaid today. I love it!!!!

Thanks Dave, the rest of the guitar is kinda understated in that we were letting the beauty of the wood be the focal point, but I wanted the fretboard to be the feature and I really love the end result....is number 3 in your future????

Thanks for stopping by and for your comments. I agree, the color is just right and then the small touch of purple for the crosses really capped it off for me.

Haha Dennis, I see you corrected your quote, I knew what you meant, but it sounds much better now, yes, in this case more was definitely better than less for me.

Long story ... Neil is embroiled in a tough family situation. If all goes well it should be in my hands next week. I've told him not to worry on my account. I'll let you know when it gets here. Very much looking forward to it. Thanks for asking.

Oh sorry, and he is overseas too, so hopefully everything travels well, I guess really, it is just a 6 hour airflight and then one day to you....amazing to think it could be that quick actually.
