I thought about this for a while. It's a great question, but I couldn't answer it adequately. What I just realized is that the real question is what advice would you give yourself now. All that other stuff is past. How can you make the most of what you have left?

Thanks to the OP for a thought-provoking thread.

Ye, just to start off saying that my best advice to a younger self would violate
forum rules, so apart from that ,here goes ! Do not pick up that electric guitar , you will never be half the player you will eventually become taking up acoustic, and by the way young man learn some THEORY why don,t you !! Dream big and keep both hands on the steering wheel.

Educate and immerse your self in the arts; ,read poetry and visit the great composers NOW whilst you are young, they will both inspire and lift your spirits throughout the coming decades - and finally , SEIZE THE DAY and don't let life just happen to you by accident ,you are so much more the you think you are, plan your life and WORK that plan !!!!

PS .Make a life long friend of the best neighbourhood drummer you can find !!!
PPS ,Young man you were so right about The Beatles being the best band in history , now go and spend your hard earned money buying up their various back catalogues , go on , off you go , ( young whipper snapper !!! )

Man, a chance to re-write history but everyone goes for the small potatoes. In my time, 1955 and on, I'd be all over the globe taking what I know now and bringing it back to then. I truly believe we'd have been moon walking in 59 versus 69, or maybe even sooner, and other big stuff like that. The Days Of Future Passed would not just be the name of an album. I'd be packing the brightest of the bright back 62 years in an on-going loop that places mankind on new worlds as I type this. Nuts to the guitar!

I like your thinking Pitar! Actually the only real regret I have is not being forced to learn the piano as a child. It's not as though I didn't have the teachers, or pianos (had them in spades) but I wouldn't sit still long enough, and mum was coping with the loss of my dad (died when I was 3).

At the end of the day, Dirk is spot on. What advice should you give yourself NOW. Follow it! I learnt, as a result of a life changing event in 2001 (June 8th, NOT 9/11 - though that did reinforce it) NO REGRETS!

My advice to young me would have been: The ones who told you that you can't are wrong. You can and you will. Now get moving.

After 35 years, I would counsel myself not to build a house out of wood. As much as I love log houses especially if not left to go weathered grey, they require too much maintenance. I probably wouldn't have listened though. I'm close to done with it now. Fortunately, my two sons are heeding my advice with their own homes, investing in modern materials that will sustain the elements and look good over the long haul...get the best foundation, windows/doors and roof materials you can afford.

The 2 hardest things in life and maintaining a long-term marriage,
and raising teenagers. Do not rush into marriage, ever. Be prepared
when your loving child turns 16 and does not want to hang out with you anymore. If the person you are going to marry already has serious issues, marriage WILL NOT fix these issues. If you are already married and your marriage has serious issues, having a child together WILL NOT fix these issues.
Do not hate your parents simply because they were a bit tough on you as a teen, with curfews, etc. I know people close to me that hated a certain parent for no good reason, only to have them die, then be full of regret that they were not nicer to their mom or dad. Always go with your gut feeling. If your boyfriend/girlfriend/fiancee is into heavy drinking and/or drugs, run!
They will not change.
I could go on and on, but that is a start.

Be kinder to your parents and spend as much time with them as you can. They are gone too soon.

Our kids eventually grew up and became our friends, Of course there were times in their teen years.... but that is another story. You can never change anyone else, only yourself.

These have all been great to read, I have thoroughly enjoyed them all! The best advice I could give a kid of 22 would be to acquire the intangibles, love, patience and practice, practice, practice.

"What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Self if you Could Time Travel?"

You can't trust anyone over 40,

And watch out for circular logic.

I would train myself to live as hedonistically as humanly possible.
I would let myself know that I only have one very short life to live
and that I could die or be killed at any moment.
I would teach myself to never follow anyone but myself.
