Good Ole Andy, I used to stop in my tracks (as a kid) when I saw him with a guitar on the porch. And if I knew the episode had the Dillards on I'd be glued to the set.

Hey Woody b I grew up in the same county, close to Shelby though. I spent a little time in Boiling Springs

I just finished watching Andy pick a slow one (Otis was in the cell and thought he was dead) and what he did was simple enough. It's the quick stuff with the hammer on's that he does where I lose it. As for the porch pickin' out in the country, I'm there, but all alone. Nobody around to play with.

Reading this thread sure brings back some wonderful memories. Not sure but the style of picking that Andy did was something like Maybelle Carters style.

I think I better understand now why I can't get U tube here. I am on a very slow dial up under the palm trees of Thailand. Before it will down load we have a connection interruption and it all shuts down. Sorry to be a little off topic.

Maybelle Carter always down strummed as well as up, in various combinations, and she played melody on the bass strings, and she wore thumb and finger pick. Andy's style is not like that at all, although they may both derive from similar techniques. Maybelle's derived from early banjo techniques, while Andy's is parlor guitar. But IIRC (I could be mistaken, but I think I remember this), that parlor guitar technique is also the source for the banjo style she evolved into her characteristic guitar style. So its twice removed from parlor guitar. (side note: I'm bummed we have no recordings of her playing banjo).

Dial up is part of this topic, now. Hand crank phones are appropriate too. Just be glad you dont have hand crank dial up!

Clever. Dig it.

Sorry to go off the topic, but I need to rant...

I live in rural Vermont and do not have the luxury of choice for internet access. It's dial-up or satellite and that's it. No cable, no DSL, no FIOS, nada. I went with satellite because I could not stand dial-up anymore. It's expensive and limited to 200mb per 24 hours download and upload. If you go over, they throttle you back to slower than dial-up for 24 hours as punishment. Oh, and the tech-support from India is spectacular .

Or I can pick up the phone and jiggle the switch hook a few times and ask Sarah (it was Sarah, right?) the operator if she's knows if any of the neighbors can find an answer for me. Kind of like an early version of Google....
