Default I have an HD-35, what Gibson would you get?

Martin and Gibson have quite a history. As a Martin HD-35 (2012) owner, I'd also like to get a big sounding Gibson. Probably a dreadnought? What do you suggest and why?

Sounds like you're up for an AJ...

Since you already have rosewood, I'd get a J35 or J45. Look around a little bit , find a good one and you'll be very happy.

The biggest sounding Gibson I've played was the new OJ 1934 reissue. It is an amazing guitar although sounded a little brighter than most of the GIbsons I have tried, fit and finish and tone was more what I associate with collings, seriously top notch. It is very loud and big sounding guitar indeed with really superb, clean tone and a wonderful neck. I would have bought it but I liked the warmth of my shorter scale J-45 1942 banner reissue on this occasion just a touch, and being a reissue with an an adi top and a big neck it's also about the loudest, most resonant j-45 you can find short of an early vintage one. The standard AJ is a good model also but if you want the best tone and volume the Oj is in a different league IMHO. Expensive though... Good luck

It's not that simple with Gibson, as they are quite variable -- even within the same model. You need to get out there and play some to see what you like.

I would however also recommend a J-45 or one of its short-scale variants like the J-45TV. If you buy a rosewood long-scale AJ, you will put your HD-35 in competition and ultimately favor one and disregard the other.

I agree with the OJ.
If that is out of your budget, I suggest a Southern Jumbo True Vintage or a J-45 True Vintage.

All of these would give you a nice mahogany Gibson tone .

If you prefer rosewood, the AJ is the best option.

Forget the Gibson, get yourself a new D18 to go with that 28 and you are set for life. Seriously I have tried some Gibsons lately and not to impressed. Maybe a Gibson jumbo.

Like others have said, I would get something with mahogany b/s. I love both my HD35 and J45tv. They are VERY different.

Get the OJ.

Or look for a good J-45. They seem to vary a bit more in quality.

Cool I have a Martin D-35, and wonder about getting a Gibson

For a long time I was looking for a slope shoulder Gibson, didn't matter which model, except I didn't want a reverse belly bridge.

Then I tripped over a vintage slope shoulder Martin D-35 12-string in excellent condition for less than any Gibson slope shoulder, and snapped that up instead. Now, I have no need for a Gibson.

A big sounding Gibson and something completely different to your Martin has got to be a maple Gibson SJ-200.
I know you said 'probably a dreadnought' but maybe give the jumbo a try.

This was going to be my suggestion as well. One of my favorite Gibsons of all time
