Has anyone had any luck running some external effect pedals while using a line 6 helix? i am going to buy a strymon big sky soon and i want to route it through the signal path.

Lots of people doing that. Easy to add outboard effects anywhere in the signal chain.

Default Helix

I've been doing that a lot lately with four ins and outs it's pretty easy. I recently picked up a Strymon Riverside. Real nice patching it in between a compressor and an amp.

Default Strymon

The Riverside is awesome. It's not limited to guitar. Has treble, mid, and bass eq and works well with other instruments like bass and both of my Chapman Sticks. The ODs in the Helix work OK with my guitar but not as good with my other instruments. Also, the Riverside can adapt to different amps via that three position switch.
