New song for your critique
Hey friends,
I've just recorded one of my favorite originals, and I'd like your thoughts, suggestions, compliments (at least I'm honest), etc.. The song is called "28 Days," and can be heard here: http://boomp3.com/listen/c24s2y02t_s/28-days Recorded in my room this afternoon with my Rode NT1 running through a MobilePre USB. Thanks!

I like it . . . I like it . . . I like it!
cool song, cool harmonies . . . you have a real smooth voice The only negative is just on the mix. I, personally, would like the vocals just a hair more out front. The lyrics get a bit muddy in the beginning. I want to hear more stuff ... what kind of venues do you play?

Sounds excellent, in spite of problems with boomp3. Great job. The song fits your voice perfectly. This song has good commercial value, IMO.
. . . I'm listening to it again. Really good stuff. This has got to be one of the best originals I've ever heard here.

Andrew, I liked the lyrics and your singing. The guitar work is simple strumming, so not much to comment on there. However, if you don't mind some suggestions, here are a couple of thoughts for you to consider:
1. C-Am is such an over used sequence that the opening/intro made me expect the C, Am, F, G 1950s-type ballad. I recommend you change the intro or simply shorten it to get away from the two chord ordinary sound. 2. See if you can develop a rhythm for the strum, rather than the straight strum used. When there is only a guitar for instrumentation, a straight strum can become monotonous (adding the harmonies helped, but a varied strum may be better). 3. If a more rhythmic strumming doesn't work out, try finger picking and strumming only for emphasis where needed. This song has good, strong basics, now you need to develop some style for it to separate it from any other! I hope this helps by giving you some ideas to try!

Barry, Bob --
Thanks for the kind words, and for the constructive criticism as well. This is indeed why I love this forum. The song was up for download I believe, if either of you were so inclined (just thought I'd throw it out there). I'll be sure to keep you updated on any new songs I record.

The song rocks, you did a great job.
The strumming is perfect to me. A good song stands alone, it does not need a bunch of fancy production! I did have some trouble getting it to play, it kept stopping, but I did not download it.

Yeah, man. This is a good joint. And you have a very nice voice. Good tone and character. Bit like Ryan Adams. Wish I could sing like that.
And I wouldn't touch the strumming either. Intro sounds good to me too. It works. Why mess with it? And who cares if Am-C is played out. When regular people - not songwriting nerds - hear a tune they don't care about that kinda stuff. Just if it sounds good. And this does. Cheers! -M |
