Default Pickguard removal and replacement - looking for some tips

I'm planning to remove and replace the guard on my Gibson J-15. I will be using the hair dryer removal method which I successfully did once before (GS Mini).

I will use low heat and go very slow starting the the pointy end. I'm not that worried about that part of it.

I want to make sure the new guard goes in the exact right place. Any tips for that? I'm thinking about making a type of paper flap and taping it to the guard and the guitar top. Then I can fold it over and remove the backing once it's in the right position. I may also try to use the position of the old guard as a guide, marking the ends/corners with painters tape.

I'd love to hear from some of you who have some experience with this procedure.

Thanks in advance. I'll post a pic when it is finished.

I think you will find that the area under the old pick guard will be somewhat lighter in color than the rest of the guitar. It should leave a perfect outline of the pick guard. The top will usually darken with age.

That's true but the guitar is relatively new so there may not be much of a tan line.

Have seen a you tube video of someone who put painters tape on one side after positioning. He then lifted the free side removed the backing and layed it back down. Painter's if not left to long will not harm the finish.
