RT Guitars ??
Here's something I've not seen before - Reverse Tension Guitars (craigslist ad). I'm curious to see if anyone has one, or has played one. I find the concept interesting, and thought others might feel the same. Discuss?

Wow! The sustain of the guitar in the video is breathtaking! The design would likely be wonderful for some types of music, eg., DADGAD ethereal, and not so good for others eg., Bluegrass/Carter-style flatpicking.

SpruceTop's comment is significant. The basics of this design are not new, as it ends up being somewhat like an archtop. The tonal results will either please you or not; I wouldn't go there myself. One red flag: in the shot of the neck/body joint (seen from the top) the sides appear to curve in ever so slightly as they meet the neck. Unless it's just a weird photo angle, I would say (from a distance, perhaps wrongly) that this both looks bad and may reflect inexperience or inattention from the builder. There are some other slightly awkward areas as well, in the other pix.

Interesting concept,
I would imagine eliminating the torque on the bridge allows for a much lighter build. Setting up and equalizing the tension on the 2 sets of strings must be a nightmare. Not sure about the sound, overtones are really stepping on each other, may work on very simple arrangements or something where an ethereal feel is called for. I think it would be a great guitar for certain thing, otherwise limited. Still, its nice seeing someone out there doing something different |

Looks like he might be onto something good. I wonder how much downward pressure there is on the bridge, top and the pencil thin braces from the 12 strings pulling down on the top? Not much, I guess. If there is a lot of pressure, there could be a structural problem over time.

Based on the video it sounds about like you'd expect, banjo like twang and little depth of tone. Not what I consider desirable in a flattop guitar.

I can't say that I was impressed at all by the video clip of the guitar being played...
Sounds like another case of a solution in search of a problem... |

Reverse tension
Looks like kind of an offshoot of the spider bridge I've seen.
I would be worried about extra tones and harmonics from that long stretch of string between the tailpiece and bridge. I have enough trouble with the short sections between the tuner posts and nut. |
