They call the wind, "Maria!"

When ever I think of a hootenanny, this song comes to mind. Don't know why?

A letter came today from my draft board
With trembling hands I read the questionnaire
It asked me lots of things about my mama and poppa
Now that ain't what I call exactly fair

So I'm headed for the nearest foreign border
Vancouver may be just my kind of town
'Cause they don't need the kind of law and order
That tends to keep a good man underground

A sad old soldier once told me a story
About a battlefield that he was on
He said a man should never fight for glory
He must know what is right and what is wron
g

So I'm headed for the nearest foreign border
Vancouver may be just my kind of town
'Cause they don't need the kind of law and order
That tends to keep a good man underground

Now I don't know how much I owe my uncle
But I suspect it's more than I can pay
He's asking me to sign a three year contract
I guess I'll catch the first bus out today

So I'm headed for the nearest foreign border
Vancouver may be just my kind of town
'Cause they don't need the kind of law and order
That tends to keep a good man underground
That tends to keep a good man underground

Flying Burrito Brothers - My Uncle

Inspired by your post, I did a little research and found the university's own history of the events. Interesting stuff. Anyway ...

At the time, my favorite peace/anti-war songs were Eve of Destruction (P.F. Sloan, as performed by Barry McGuire) and Get Together (the Youngbloods). They haven't held up as well as many others mentioned.

"Little Boxes" was one of my favorites when I was a kid in the 60s - though it was a bit obnoxious and not about peace or war....more about conformity. I liked the tune and the way "ticky tacky" sounded Pete Seeger sung it.

If you want to cut through some of the sentimentality and have a little fun, do Randy Newman's "Political Science." Actually, most Randy Newman songs would do that.

Yes, you are right KK did write the song but Gordon and Janice Joplin both had big hits with them...Personally I liked Gordon's take on it.

I really like this one also. From Frank Loesser's "The Most Happy Fella" -- a broadway show of 1956.
