Welcome!

Just wanted to add another vote for Tobias Music. As family businesses go, they are the gold standard. Good people!

Bimmer...

Sorry for my cryptic reply. I love Chicago Music Exchange (bought 2 Les Paul's and a Gibson EC-20 from them), but what I meant was, what would the purpose of meeting at CME? Do they have a meeting room or something? That is kind of what I meant...but sounds good to me!

Cheers...

Tobias does, they are a forum sponsor, and they are close to my house. The trifecta.

I'm pretty sure as the result of this thread I will be signing up for lessons at The Old Town school...looks like $192 for 8 80 min lessons... I really want to pull the trigger on this. Any comments?

What lessons are you thinking about? I took flatpick lessons this year and they really helped my playing. A big part is motivating and focussing practice time. You save a bit with a membership.

Rjlipton...

I would probably be starting at the very beginning, taking either guitar 1 or rep one.

I really like the idea of the group setting and working through the songbook.

I called Old Town today and they have a location which is only a 10 min drive for me. I think I'm going to see if I can go sit in on a lesson as an observer for a few mins and see if I like it.

Gatherings are mostly a social event. There are people of varying abilities and interests. I'm happy to get together and trade some songs. But sitting with a dozen guitar players all strumming Eagles tunes is not my idea of fun. I don't want to be snobby. That's all well and fine for a couple of songs. But I'm not driving 25 miles for just that.

Hey Todd.

I visited them last week. They have a wide variety of courses that you can get at many levels. What I noticed is that people absolutely love that school for many reasons, one of them is that they meet other musicians and play together. If you grab a coffee at the Starbucks in the corner you might see guys/gals hanging out there before or after class. I did the tour with a buddy of mine who takes uke classes.
