2005 Ramirez 1E
Hi, I recently purchased a 2005 Ramirez 1E for 450.00 in good shape. The only
flaw it has is a slight flaw in the finish near the edge of the top. It looks like a crack but when I took it to my luthier he inspected it and told me it does not go all the way and it is a flaw in the PU finish. He told me not to worry about it and when I asked him if he could refinish the complete cedar top and he told me that he could not guarantee the sound would not change. He was very impressed with how it sounds now and told me again not to worry and to keep a humidifier in the case. What would you do in my case? Any opinion will be appreciated. Thanks Norman2

I can't see spending the money to refinish the top on a $450 guitar. How much does a complete refinish cost? Humidifier in the case seems like a good idea.

I bought a new Ramirez in 1977 and played it for a couple of years. Incredible instrument. Then my guitar playing was discontinued until this past summer (2017), so the Ramirez was not touched for about 40 years. Anyway Before I started with guitar again, I gave it to my son, who is a trained musician. So he has a pristine, perfect Ramirez. Hope he learns guitar one day.

Your luthier says the crack is just in the finish, so you can relax. There are ways to spot fill a crack in the lacquer, and its lacquer, not Polyurethane. It would still cost too much to do a good spot repai, unless you know how to do it yourself. At $450, I’d say you found a bargain. Just play it, and keep it humidified.
