Thumbs up excellent nite at Bristols Rhythm & Roots-Tony R, Red Molly,Wayne Henderson

the weather started a little chilly this morning, but by evening was quite nice. the crowd was probably a little smaller than normal, by nite the weather though brisk was fine and the smaller crowd was pleasant. excellent food vendors with wares vendors. good stuff, not junk.

the wife and i started our evening off with "The Greencards". a group of 3 men and 1 woman-fiddle, mandolin, bass and guitar. the mandolin man sounded a lot like chris thile style playing. group had some excellent songs and crowd participation. some hard driving guitar by the lead picker of the group.

next up we saw wayne henderson and 2 friends in the nice Paramount theatre-after their set we stayed for Red Molly. A trio of young ladies playing smooth dobro, banjo, guitar and harmony from heaven. check'm out on youtube(black flowers, you'll never leave harlen alive).

we caught some of Tony Rice and the TR unit on the main stage around 1130p before leaving.

John Oates was performing and hanging out with the crowd(of Hall & Oates)

Lots of excellent performers who fly under the radar.

this is an awesome event this year, weather supposed to be very nice sat/sun. we paid $40 for weekend passes, not sure what day passes cost.

tomorrow we are heading back for Red Molly again,Darrell Scott, The Robert Randolf Band, Chris Rose, Chris woodward, and Anthony Keys(some guys i know), The Everybody Fields(yes, they are together again, with this being the debut), the ETSU Celtic Band if time allows. checking out the luither displays(Gerald Sheppard was there last year), and eating some of the excellent greek food and homemade ice cream.

check it out and come by and see the goods. Bristol Tn/Va.

Whats cool is they shut off State Street and you walk thru town checking out the music. Folks on streetsides and corners, 7 outdoor stages and way many indoor venues. All free for the admission price.

I live up in Yankee country (but I'm a Red Sox fan), and can't tell you all below the M/D line how envious we roots music types are of the performers who circulate around you down there, seemingly all the time.

We don't have a Rhythm & Roots type festival up here that attracts those you get (or a Wayne Henderson Festival either) - Rice has been in Boston just once in the last four years - Peter gets him up here - and won't be around again til November. Sigh...

Sounds like a good time, Daryl, hope the weather cooperates.
