Default Oud vs a Lute?

Hi,

I'm fascinated by the exotic sound of the Arabic Oud, but I'm a bit concerned about it not having any frets. Will a Lute sound similar?

I play guitar, but I really want to add that throaty, brassy sound to my recordings

Any suggestions for good $300-$500 Ouds, Lutes welcome

Thanks

Likely beyond your price point but check out the Godin Inuk...essentially an oud with frets.

Got a used Godin Inuk for $500. Very cool instrument, wide string spacing caused in the Middle East it is played with a pick like pencil. I use a flat pick and hybrid finger pick it. Totally unique

Checked out a Godin Inuk, - no, I'm definitely interested in buying an acoustic instrument only and something that sounds more natural.

Are there any Oud brands that stand out? Best place to buy online?

Check out Lark in the Morning website and search for ouds or lutes. They have a few listed.

Happy hunting!
