Default Edirol R-44

Do any of you use the Edirol R-44? It offers a few things that would be attractive in a portable recorder, namely 4 channels and the mid/side encoder.

How is the sound quality? Are the preamps good? How is the battery life?

Thanks!

Bryan

Since I already had an Echo AudioFire 8 audio interface, I bought a Olympus LS-10 portable to quickly record ideas. However, I really like the recording quality and have been playing with Audicity rather than the programs that come with these units.

Many of the folks here are enamored of the Zoom H4 and H2.

I myself have a Sony PCM D-50 but I haven't spent enough time using it to give any good insight. Sorry i'm unable to give you any feedback about the Edirol.

I suspect the differences among all such units are minimal.

I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones.

Hi Bryan...
Zoom H4 then added an H2.

The new one they are bringing out looks like another step up too...

I have the Edirol R-09. I just use it for capturing ideas while writing a new song, so in that regard, it serves its purpose. The sound quality kind of bites though! It also eats batteries like c-monster eats cookies! The on/off button is too small. The USB connection is inconveniently located under the flimsy battery cover lid. It’s pricey too!

One of the things that attracted me to the R-44 is that it can record four channels simultaneously. In my mind, I could record a stereo pair of microphones, a close microphone, and also record the pickup so I had a track without environmental noises.
