Default alvarez yairi sound

A question about Alvarez yairi guitars,do they all share a similar sound,
And how would you describe it?
Dave

In my experience they are all very balanced with good note separation, somehow always seem to project the open d string prominently, not sure why. All that I have played are very lightly built, great projection and resonance, excellent construction, great guitars.

Not sure if they all share a similar sound, but I've spent some time playing a rosewood dread and a rosewood grand auditorium, both at least 25 years old or more, and they were fan-freaking-tastic! My brother in law owns the grand auditorium and refuses to sell it to me. It's in the top three finest guitars I have played. The other two were a Bourgeois and a Martin OM28 that seemed to have something special about it.

I've never noticed a similar sound in any brand of guitar.

They all have certain models that are "in the ballpark" of a certain tonal range but that's about it in my opinion.

I've had more Goodalls than any other brand and they all sounded different.

I have an Alvarez/Yairi DY-71, spruce over Koa, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, tortoise pickguard and binding. Built in 1985, its just amazing. Bright, but good mids and low too, just all around perfect...at least to me. Dont know what to compare it too, just sound different.

I've owned 8 or 10, and would not say that they share a similar sound. Most of them were dreadnoughts that sounded great, each in its own fashion.

The one I've kept is an old, beat up DY-74, which is a D-28 knockoff. Its tone is killer, a bit brighter than any D-28 I've played. I just had a partial refret done, and it plays perfectly. Lots of dings and dents from previous owners, but Yairis are sturdily built and can take it.

It lives a good life now, I baby the heck out of it.

I really haven't met an Alvarez that I didn't like, they're just consistently good. But I really wouldn't say they all share the same sound, they each have a unique personality. I know one guy that's a professional bluegrass picker that plays an old Alvarez Yairi that is an absolute monster. He refuses to get rid of it and will out gun any Martin that goes up against it. They're not all as good as his but there are some amazing ones out there.

Default Yairi

Describing a sound is not something I can do.

My Yairi had everything I wanted in a guitar. sound, feel, It was my perfect instrument. I would love to have it back. It was stolen twice last September first by the dung beetle excrement that broke into my home then later that day by the legal system. ( held for evidence ).

I own two Yairi's and love the sound of both. My DY62C is exceptional IMO. Many of my friends
say that it's the best sounding acoustic they have ever heard or played.

I have an '83 DY54. It sounds good and not like a Martin or a Guild. That's about the only way I know to describe the sound. Love my Yairi.

DaveHo, I have one - how would I describe it ?.
Medium complexity and resonance - so outa the box voice.
Fairly good amplitude also, can be picked outa a jam.
All in all a good quality steel string flat top played acoustically.
I don’t hear (or get) the ‘share a similar sound’ within same brands - a simple string change can cause a big difference in how we perceive a guitar / brands sound.

My GY-1 is a fine guitar.
I describe the sound as "kicks other guitars to the curb and takes their lunch money."
