That is spectacular.

If memory serves, Tim McKnight recently made a guitar (or parts) out of olive wood. I'd be curious to compare both experiences with it.

I will be following this thread with great interest. I have always looked at the Olivewood available locally out here in California but was unable to find suitable timber for guitars. I recently lucked upon a piece of quarter sawn Olivewood wide enough for backs and sides!!

There is a lot of talent in the world of collectible knife making. Howard has lent me some books from his extensive library. They are quite inspiring!

Any idea what kind of tone to expect from Olivewood?
Thanks Nemoman! I'm working it like it's Ebony. It's stiff, heavy, and taps with a lot of overtone. I selected a little softer top to keep it warm like I would with most Ebony.

Glad to have you along! It's hard to find good cuts of Olivewood large enough to do what we do. I have enough for four guitars and count myself fortunate.

You've been paying attention! So since you've brought it up I can only ask wouldn't an Olive wreath rosette be an appropriate addition?

I've been working like crazy to get this idea to work. There are 93 different pieces here made of Yellow Heart, Argentinian Verawood, Peruvian Walnut.
In order to add a round look to the olives I scorched the edges using hot sand in a fry pan;

What nice about this method is the shading goes all the way through the wood so it doesn't sand off.
I'll say it's a real trick to set these pieces right into the spruce. I destroyed two top sets figuring this out;

I think it's the right look though;

Mark, really like the work! That rosette is really special. Surely this first one out of Olive wood should be yours to keep and play, yes?

So wonderful. I wish we had known each other when we lived in New Jersey. Such is life! I guess I will have to live vicariously through your killer photos.

Going old school with the scorched inlay. Spectacular looking.

I may order my version of this guitar to have the olives with pimentos in them!

Thanks Paul, My first effort came out really well, nice enough that if I did it again with improvements I thought of while doing it, I would really nail it. The second one was a complete disaster as one of my improvements was not the improvement I thought it would be!

Thanks Woody, This one will be for sale. It's a spec though so in a sense I'm the customer as I call all of the shots. This Penelope model is my oldest body design and it's probably the most "Hatcher" of my 5 models. I am rethinking every element and pushing to take every part to the next step in design, technique, and performance as applicable

We tried to get together a couple times as I was about to move, sorry we didn't pull it off. New Hampshire is a wonderful place to visit!

Thanks Cocobolo Kid! I've been working on this guitar for a couple months so at this point the build thread is still catching up to where I actually am. So I can say I know I have a lot more to show!

Hey ukejon, you want pimentos? You got pimentos! After doing this rosette there isn't much I'm afraid to take on.
One of the influences that have
really helped me out while I was developing the techniques to do this olive wreath rosette was the wonderful marquetry work done by another local artist Craig Altobello. Craig lives up around the corner and we've been swapping woods and ideas for a while now (hey, can I borrow a cup of epoxy?). Using hot sand for shading was a technique introduced to me by Craig.
Here is a sample of Craig's work;

Default Elevated Fret Board

I've done one elevated fret board previously on this Penelope model and was very happy with the result. It is a natural combination with this high-waisted 12 fret guitar. Maybe it sounds better, I don't know, I'll have to make a few more to know that but, I only had to make one to know there is an improvement in playing comfort. It also makes for a more stable neck attachment. So this is now standard on my Penelope model. There may be an upcharge for me to do it the old easier way.

When setting up for an elevated fingerboard arrangement we start with how the sides are cut. The tail end of the top is set slightly higher giving a rise to the longitudinal line of the top. The depth of the body does not change at the heel and tail of the guitar;
