Wink 2014 Tim Reede Custom OM; (SOLD)

2014 Tim Reede Custom OM; Now $XXXX+ shipping! Adirondack over African Wenge, flamed koa bindings throughout, incl neck & headstock, 5 piece laminated neck (mahogany/maple/walnut), Gotoh 510 chrome tuners, green abalone & MOP trim. She is a class act throughout, in very good condition, with just a couple swirls & scuffs here & there. No cracks or issues, neck is perfect, action is low for fingerstyle at 4/64" high E @ 12th, & 5/64" low E. 1 3/4" nut width, 2 1/4" saddle spacing. Frets are like new. I recently traded for this one here on the forum. New, it was owned by Sam Breckenridge for a couple years. He traded it back to Tim Reede for a fan fret. Tim gave it a set up, & dressed the frets, & resold it. See links below. The sound clips are very "electronically induced," but you can get an idea. K&K Trinity with mic installed, as well as a John Greven beveled pick guard. Selling as I need a wider string spacing. Here is the reverb link to pics:

To further induce G.A.S. and various temptation phenomenon, I have reduced the price. Half price for a hand built, one-of-a-kind, luthier's creation! And TONE for dayzzzzzzzzzzzzz ...........

Yes, Fred, & I see you do not yet have an OM in your line-up! Think how swell she'd look, sitting comfortably between your Doerr & Tony Vines Artisan!

Tim Reede only builds a couple of these customs per year. Finding one on the used market is as rare as finding a gun rack in a Volvo!

Nice! What is wenge? The color is like rosewood but the grain pattern is completely different. Is it related to rosewood? How would you describe it tonally?

..... Hey, Peter! Wenge is an African wood (not endangered), not literally in the rosewood family, but sonically in the rosewood family. It's commonly known as "The African Rosewood." It has a glassy reflective property like Brazilian, yet has the rosewood warmth and overtones. Color is similar to Indian rosewood, but darker (semi-sweet chocolate) w/a tighter grain pattern. From the LMI website:

Wenge: Millettia laurentii

"Wenge is the new Brazilian", declares famed luthier Ervin Somogyi.
Premierguitar.com/Feb '13

"Wenge is a large straight growing tree found from central through western Africa. It is abundant and should be commercially available for years to come. In 1983 this wood was first suggested to us as a guitar tonewood by maker Don Musser. In recent years as the price of Indian Rosewood has increased, Wenge has become a more viable alternative body wood. The grain of the Wenge sets is tight and straight across the entire width of backs and sides."

Thanks, Steve. I just did a search for "wenge tonewood" and found Dana Bourgeois' page which says wenge is "a dense, dark-colored African hardwood unrelated to the rosewoods, has tonal properties remarkably similar to those of Brazilian rosewood." So, you've got a hand built guitar "remarkably similar" to a Brazilian rosewood guitar for under $3k. NICE. https://bourgeoisguitars.net/tonewoods-htm/
