Default Collings DS1 12-Fret German/IRW - SOLD

2014 Collings DS1 German Spruce top over Indian RW with Western Shaded Sunburst Sitka top. Very good shape, deep bass and good balance without the boom of its Martin predecessor. Awesome for finger style, and a strong and loud strummer. I'm overloaded with dreads and jumbos, including another Collings CJ35 jumbo. So it’s going as I try to downsize the arsenal by a few guitars. Someone will love this, lots of fans on AGF.

Frets are great (very little wear), bridge is good, heck it's practically new and it's a Collings, built like a masterpiece. Though in very good shape, I won’t call it flawless, though I don’t see any substantial marks, nicks or other damage worth mentioning. If you’re looking for a museum piece, might want to buy from someone more obsessive about aesthetics -- but it's very clean, and I'd call it excellent shape. It’s a great player and a great looker.

[B]Tax Day Sale: $old!

Default Updated Specs - German Spruce & 1 ¾ Neck

Bump with updated specs received from Collings today. Surprise, it's German Spruce top (I suspected that). Also, this has 1 ¾ nut, -- still feels wide despite the reality (I will measure).

Default J200 Trades?

Bumpy ... A few trade offers, and I am open to some trades. Particularly would be really interested in a Gibson J200 with some Gibby tone mojo (probably what cash would eventually go to). However since I just picked up an OM I'm in cautious mode on other trades.

Thanks for the trade ideas, photos and clips.

Default Weekend Bump

Tomorrow I'll post some more pix I took in the sunshine by request. Played today and had those second thought pangs, but I am over my limit. This pup has some monster bass presence. In some ways similar to my old Martin VS 12-fretter, but with a solid thump instead of the boom. Plus that Collings super note separation that creates and unique dynamic of strong lows and crystal clear highs.

This will be a beautiful guitar. I have two DS1s and two DS2hs.

However, I'm confused at the numbering....I'd call it a DS2(RW) G or E (German or more correctly European) and SB (burst)

If it didn't have the thinner neck, I'd be tempted.

HI Silly,

Yes, it looks more like a DS2, but it's actually a DS1 with a bunch of options. Here's the email with build specs I recently got from Collings. To be honest, I need to measure this because it seems wider than 1 ¾, but it may be the string spacing.

Hi PJ,

Thank you for contacting us and for being a Collings DS1 player! We are always happy to help.
This DS1 was completed on 2/27/2014 and was originally sent to Hill Country Guitars. Its specs are as follows (custom specs in bold) -
  • Top German spruce
  • Back & Sides East Indian rosewood
  • Neck Honduran mahogany
  • Body Binding Ivoroid with b/w/b/w top purfling
  • Fingerboard Binding None
  • Peghead Binding None
  • Bridge Ebony belly-style with 2 5/16" spacing
  • Fingerboard Ebony with MOP long dots
  • Bridge Pins/End Pin Ebony with MOP dot
  • Nut Bone, 1 3/4"
  • Saddle Bone, Drop-in
  • Neck Profile Modified V
  • Peghead Profile Tapered slotted square with volute
  • Neck Joint Mortise & tenon hybrid
  • Truss Rod Fully adjustable
  • Frets Medium 18% nickel-silver
  • Peghead Veneer Ebony with MOP Collings logo
  • Tuners Nickel Waverly (16:1 ratio)
  • Backstrip 1-style (Walnut)
  • Rosette b/w Purfling
  • Scale Length 25 1/2"
  • Brace Material Sitka spruce
  • Brace Pattern Pre-war scalloped X-brace
  • Fingerboard Radius 14" - 26" compound
  • Body Finish High gloss nitrocellulose lacquer
  • Western Shaded top
  • Pickguard Tortoise
  • Strings D'Addario EJ-17 (.013"- .056")
  • Case Deluxe Hardshell case by TKL

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I just picked up one of these - mine is German/Mah and I'm thrilled with the guitar.

The neck with its V-ish profile does feel a bit big at first - mine is 1 13/16 which subjectively feels a touch bigger than most 1 13/16 necks I've played.

It's a different vibe for me, finger style is the strength for sure and a huge dynamic range with very sweet complex trebles oweing largely to the German top and bridge placement I think.

Anyways no affiliation with the OP, just tossing my largely positive feedback into the mix.

Dale, that's interesting you also feel like the nut is wider than the spec. I definitely don't mind it. I need to stop picking it up because I need to not get sucked back in:-)

But, as I said in my description, it certainly excels in the fingerstyle department, with that famous Collings note separation.

I learned the hard way not to pick up guitars you're selling. That's three guitars I'm not picking up at the moment. I hope one sells soon!

Default Lowered Cash Price; Trade Options Added

Added a few things I'd be interested to trade for:
  • Gibson SJ/J 200 - preferably newer reissue or a real semi vintage one.
  • D18A '37, or a few others D1, OM-28
  • Maybe a Taylor 812/912 12-fret or other custom Taylor 12-frets

I may consider some things in the similar categories. Depending on the instrument cash one way or the other if necessary.
