Default Introduction

Hi, I'm Niko and new to the group. I've already posted on Play, but I thought I would introduce myself.
I've only ever strummed cholds and I what to try fingerstyle.
My Guitar was hand made back in 1987 by a guy who now builds Smallman ? classical guitars. At that time he built a couple of steel strung guitars and I had one.
Reading posts on here and what you can pay for a good guitar I've no idea where my guitar fits in and how good it is. Very good I hope. I can't justify a new guitar at the moment so here goes anyway.....

Hey Niko, welcome to the AGF! We're glad to have you... this is a great place to learn and share experiences. Play whatever guitar you have and play it a lot.

Concentrate on your playing. If you feel the neck is too big or too narrow, the string too hard to fret, etc, just take it to a guitar tech to have it set up. Less than $100 to do this, probably closer to $50. If it still feels too big, etc then go back to the guitar store and try some guitars out. You need to be able to play a bit before you can tell what you really need, so keep playing and practicing first. Don't get sucked into the "my guitar isn't good enough" black hole. Uncomfortable to play is one thing, "good enough" is another. Practice cures a lot of guitar "problems."

Niko, if the person who built your guitar is Greg Smallman, then you do indeed have a rare bird instrument. Greg Smallman's classical guitars are world-renowned and highly regarded by players and builders alike.

I hadn't heard that he made a few steel string guitars early in his career, but wasn't especially surprised, either. Please take some photos and post them in this thread when you get a chance - I'd like to see them.

Thanks, and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to disappoint. The guitar is not a Smallman, I bought my steel string of a guy who now makes Smallman style classical guitars..
