That is a side construction I have not seen before, ie. laminating the kerfed linings in the middle of the two other pieces of the sides? It also looks like the kerfed portion was not as wide as the sides in the sandwich he is holding up which makes me think those are put in with two pieces each the width of 1/2 of the sides??? If not, then there would be a space in between those two halves? Am I completely messed up here with what I think I am seeing?

Tom

The sides he’s holding are before the gluing together. The finished sides are shown in a couple pics below what he’s holding and everything is lined up and even. I will ask him about the merged linings though and any influence they might have on the sound…

Yes sir, I probably did a poor job explaining myself. He has the kerfed section laminated in the middle as part of the 3 piece sides. I have not seen that before, 3 piece laminated yes, but then the lining glued on later to the inside section. Also, if you look at the top of the pieces he is holding before laminating, you can see the kerfed piece is not as wide as the sides making me think he has to have two of those to match the width of the sides.

I doubt they have any influence on sound, I was thinking more about added weight.

I think it's just the way he's holding the 3 sides - inside, kerfling, outside...they are all the same width...

Here's what Rye said about the kerfling:
"The kerfed cedar core of the side lamination is the full width of the side. This adds mass and stiffness to the sides of the instrument. Stiffness reflects the vibration back into the top, making it more active and mass increases the vibrating area of the top. The effect of this on the sound of the instrument is more volume sustain and projection. It is a key element to achieving the quality of sound I get from my guitars."

Tom, Rye is incorporating guitar design concepts pioneered by Australian luthier/engineer/author Trevor Gore (https://goreguitars.com.au/) who advocates the use of falcate bracing and stiff/high mass rims in his instruments. Originally, many achieved the added rim mass by attaching weights but it is important that the mass be integral with the rims.

Here is an older thread where Trevor opined a bit on the topic.

So, while the body is getting its finish, on to the neck. Here’s some pics of the neck/fretboard work…

And some headstock pics. The back of the headstock is Birdseye maple to tie in with the back. I really like the tapered part going onto the neck…one of the great things about a custom build is when you’ve figured out nut width and neck thickness which are a bit out of the norm but really fit my hands and relieve some thumb tendon pain that I get on thinner necks…my granddaughter says Yes [emoji119]!!

Supper cool look to the ramps on the slotted headstock as well as the back of the neck with the maple. Awesome detailing all around!

This is looking great Jeff! Hiatuses happen.

The neck and headstock that you've showed so far should tie it all together beautifully. I can't wait to see more.

Yes, Rye’s a great guy to work with…in the hiatus, he moved to Victoria, visited family back in Australia, and had a new baby! As a pediatrician I’ve had no issues with the delay and think it’s healthy!! And, the top has been French polished too!!

Hey Jeff, it’s looking amazing. I really like his headstock, but he has assigned himself quite the challenge when it’s time to purfle and bind.
When I start feeling sorry for myself when I have to bind one of our pegheads, I’ll pull out this pic and think, “it could be worse”.
That said, doesn’t he do clean work? Mercy!

Steve
