Belated NGD - Collings I35LC (updated w/ pics)
Okay, I feel bad posting about this without providing any pics (and I know I'm going to get harrassed about it), but I recently picked up a Collings I35LC with P90 style pickups. It's a lovely cherry sunburst with ivory P90s - no pickguard. After years of playing acoustics almost exclusively, I started to get the itch to go electric again. What better way back than with a Collings? As expected, the fit and finish are perfect. As for the tone, it's awesome - great clear tones, but can get nice and dirty too. What I really love is how many different sounds you can get out of it by playing around with the volume and tone knobs.
Well I don't have any pics, and you can't even really see the guitar in this video, but you can get a decent idea of how it sounds in the hands of a master (i.e. not me). In the video, I'm singing and playing a Taylor Solidbody (it's the one with the auto-wah on). Off screen to the left is none other than jazz/fusion/microtonal master Dave Fiuczinski playing the aforementioned Collings (it's just running straight into a little Vox AC4TV tube amp). You can hear it a little better when he turns it up around the 2:30 mark, and then he really takes it for a spin around 3:45. And yes, I know I'm a super lucky guy to not only have great instruments to play, but also to have the chance to play with a guy like Dave. It was the experience of a lifetime, for sure! Love the groove. Just good playing all around. The guitar? Cannot tell from the vid recording. At 3:45 he kicks it up and it shines through there, yer right. I liked the music though, really sweet stuff. Thanks.
