Default Biological Question

I'll try to be as scientific as possible.

When a person eats something spicy, it sometimes causes a burning sensation when excreted. Why doesn't urination cause the same sensation?

Good question. What if it does burn though?

No idea . . . . but an even better question is why does it only SOMETIMES cause a burning sensation on exit?

And another: why does the chance of this happening go UP as you get older?

But a more important question to me is: Why do certain spices/sauces seem to cause you to have sudden "urgency" to find a toilet? I know it can't be because the spices travel that fast through the system.

Capsicum is the chemical found in hot peppers that causes the "hot" or "burning" sensation. It has a direct irritant effect on local tissue (including nerves which transmit the sensation). I don't know this for sure, but I imagine that capsicum is not readily absorbed, and if so it is either metabolized into a non irritating substance or not excreted by the kidneys. Thus the unabsorbed or unmetabolized capsicum is excreted in the feces, where it has the same effect going out as coming in. It is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

Ammonia and uric acid can break down the capsicum in the urine. Not so with defecation--I can tell you a horror story about someone who when he was the only Westerner at an Indian doctors' dinner decided to be macho and skip the rice and naan when he ate the vindaloo...

The simple answer is that a great deal of the material that passes through your digestive tract arrives at the other end, chemically and often physically, unchanged. What irritates the nerve endings of the mucus membranes on entry, does the same thing on exit.

The "heat" in most if not all of the "hot" spices, is due to the presence of certain non-water-soluble, organic compounds, that in pure form, are waxy solids. These kinds of compounds are not readily absorbed by the digestive tract and thus never make it into the bloodstream in amounts that, even if unchanged by metabolic processes, would sufficiently stimulate the nerve endings in the urinary tract to cause any burning sensation.

EDIT: I see everyone else beat me in explaining it.
It takes a simple mind like mine, a long time, to say something simple.

Is this why we should eat "ice cream" after eating spicy foods and then yell, "Come on ice cream"?
