Default Two Graybeards. A build documentatiom

One of these guitars is a commission and the other i am making to increase my stable of show guitars. I’m headed for LaConner in May, The Swannanoa Gathering mid summer ( all you guys should consider going to this week long guitar camp) and then BIG in September. (Another must do guitar extravaganza)

Much of my ornamentation is derivative. I owe Judson a shout out for this rosette. His latest was just the right size and I considered it too pretty to ignore. I hope changing the materials is adequate to save me from copyright infringement.

One guitar has a Sitka top with some BC and the other is an Engelmann top with the micro curl that comes from being on dead quarter. The Sitka top is for the show guitar.

The Sitka top has malachite coloration and a mystery wood that reminds me of some of VanGogh’s brush strokes, the Engelmann top has lapis and paua with the same my#tery wood. I will give a bucket of lard as prize to anyone who can guess what the wood is.

A closer look at the lapis rosette

And the malachite rosette

Those are both gorgeous, John!

Ever since B.I.G., I've been admiring Jud's rosettes as well...

Thanks Nemoman. The goal was to make them smaller by eliminating the white lines, which also simplified the rosette and emphasized the color

I will not make it to Artisan this year. Will you be going to BIG?

Thanks brother. I’m taking “dang” as a good thing.

Nobody has made a guess about the rosette wood.

Very pretty stuff John!
As for the mysreious wood
I will wildly guess curly/gnarly birch or birch burl?
Resembles what is also used for knife handles for example...
Curious as to wat it really is...

Dang John, for someone who went kicking and screaming into the stone guitar inlay world, you have become a master.
Really beautiful rosettes. Congratulations

Smile Spalted Oak Burl?

Lovely rosettes, John!

I am going to guess this might be some of your spalted oak burl from your yard

If I am correct, I have plans for your lard…. Hahaha

Glad to see a new build thread from you.

Have fun with these!

Paul

Yeah. You win thr prize. I found an insect gaul on the branch of an oak tree about the size of a grapefruit, cut it off and sliced it up. They are very colorful and busy inside

Beautiful as always John. I really like the Lapis color and how it is emphasized.
