Default Se8 matched pair demo

I received the Se8 two mic set as a Christmas present from my wife. Here's a demo recording of them using the beginning of two pieces I'm working on. The only edit I did was a slight noise reduction and some trim/fade editing.

I had them set up about a foot from the guitar's center and they were spaced about a foot apart. They were a couple of inches lower than the plane of the bottom of the sound hole, but pointed upwards a bit.

I'll have to try other mic positions and try them with my steel strings too. I like the lack of brittleness. This is pretty much what my guitar (Cordoba Fusion 14) sounds like.

Works for me. I try to space mine about two feet apart to stay well clear of the soundhole, but I didn’t catch any proximity effect in your recording.

What sort of noise did you need to reduce?

I’m trying to train my ear and build my vocabulary to describe what I hear and don’t hear with recordings like this, so I’ll hang back and eagerly await insights from to group.

Merry Christmas.

A little bit of room "air." No other way to really explain it. Here's an unedited raw section for comparison.

I had a pair of SE8s for a while and, predictably, I wish I still had them. Same goes for the KM184s I sold last week I actually think the SE8s sounded a little better, at the expense of a higher noise floor and the funny thing is that if I listen back to the recordings I made with them, I barely hear the noise floor that bothered me so much when I had them. They didn't offer the omni head yet when I had mine, and if they had, I probably would have been persuaded to keep them.

Here's a recording I made in XY but, I believe, similar distance and position to yours. No noise reduction or EQ but a bit of reverb (probably TSAR1r). Robert Garcia hauser-style guitar.

Very nice recording. Those SE8's certainly are pleasant sounding.

Since you've sold your SE8's and your 184's, what are you using now? And what differences do you hear with your latest mics?

For a while, Line Audio CM4s, but now Schoeps cmc64s. I caught the Black Friday sale just in time. FWIW they do sound very similar to the Lines, but with a much lower noise floor and probably better in other ways I’m not sophisticated enough to detect

The Lines and Schoeps both sound warmer and more realistic than the SE8s and km184s, for my taste, and seem to be easier to work with for getting the results I want. But I was also able to get results I liked with the others. The SE8s also seemed very sensitive to an electrical interference issue I had caused by the leds on my WiFi router, which at the time was located in the same room that I record in.

Can you post the track on a public site? I'd love to hear it.
