Default new broken guitar day

I ordered a second Taylor SB1-X. This one had an extra loaded pickguard and a better case and I was going to mix and match parts and keep the best of my set of everything.

I got it for a greta price and could essentially upgrade my case and keep the extra pickguard then resell the remaining guitar to totally cover my costs so I was excited by my good deal.

The seller didn't pack anything - he just threw everything in a box and the pickguard selector switch snapped in half during shipping.

Arg, now I have to negotiate a return through ebay.

What a disappointment.

Why not just replace the switch?

They aren't available anymore and they aren't standard 5-way switches

If you could post a few pictures of the switch maybe we can find a substitute at Mouser or Newark.

Arh, that's too bad. Another poor packaging mistake. As mentioned, perhaps a pic could help provide you with an alternative.

Yup. It's wires going into a switch. There are always alternatives.

yes, the switch technology isn't hard - I spoke to Taylor who were very helpful. They told me this is a modified Schaller Megaswitch-E. I checked the switches and confirmed this.

They have their own printed circuit board with a Molex connector on it. I could certainly get a Schaller switch, solder the wires on and add a Molex connector but that kind of defeats the purpose of plug-and-play.

The seller was super apologetic and refunded all my money plus shipping, so I am on the hunt again for a great deal.

Just buy a new Megaswitch, not the newest riveted stamped steel version, and transfer the circuit card which is held on by two screws from the broken to the new. No soldering necessary!

The latest stamped one is not compatible with the circuit boards from the older cast housing version. I have a T5z where the tension screw has come loose in two consecutive Megaswitches. The solution was to tighten that screw fairly hard, but I did buy the newest riveted and stamped version to see if I could transfer the circuit board. At minimum the two screws that hold the PCB to the switch are slightly farther apart :~(.

My full saga of switch and potentiometer travails with my T5z is here:

I must obviously like that guitar to have dealt with all that trouble and not have sold it.
