Default FS: Allison AJ, short scale, 12 fret TRADED IN

Dec. 17 - I traded this for another guitar. It's still a great guitar, still available at Heart's Home Acoustics, but I no longer own it. I imagine they will drop the price some now but I don't know how much. If you are interested you should make them an offer.

Okay. Deep breath. I've put my best guitar up for sale. I've taken it to Heart's Home Acoustics in Boerne, Texas to sell on consignment for me, which means if you are interested you should contact them, not me. This allows you to deal with professionals - and very nice ones - instead of my clueless self. Here's the website: http://heartshomeacoustics.com/ (The AJ on the website is not mine, by the way, but a new Allison.) If you actually visit the shop you can try my guitar for yourself - another advantage - and compare it to other great guitars, including a number of other Allisons.

I'm asking $4,200. When I bought it last December John charged me $4400, but he gave me a $400 discount for not doing the burst that I had asked for (which was very nice of him considering that what he did was so much more beautiful than what I requested), and he gave me a price break to begin with, plus he raised his base prices this year. The same guitar new would probably cost well over $5000 now.

This guitar was custom made for me to the following specs:

German spruce top
Black walnut back and sides
Adirondack bracing (traditional X bracing)
Maple binding
One piece mahogany neck
Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, bridge, and faceplate
1 23/32" nut
24.75 scale length
Bone nut, saddle, end pins

As I say, it is almost certainly my best guitar, and for fingerstyle definitely the best sounding. Unfortunately it is not my favorite guitar: it turns out I am more of a 14-fret D-18 style dreadnought person, and my Allison D-A mahogany dread gets all of my attention. I wanted to keep the AJ for the day I magically turn into a fingerstyle specialist, but alas, I need to raise some money.

Sound: balanced and sweet, yet powerful and loud. I've been shopping for an OM and comparing the AJ to some excellent examples: the sound is often quite similar (especially an Allison OM, of course) but the AJ is so much louder! I could never bring myself to trade: I always felt like I was giving away too much in the bargain.

Strong fundamental with lots of sustain, like all of John's guitars, but with a bit more note separation than usual, probably because of the black walnut. Sweet and deep as you would expect from a 12 fret.

And very pretty. I'll try to dig up a few decent pictures. I doubt HHA will get it up on their website any time soon.

I forgot to talk about condition: it's like new, 99.9%. There may be a few scratches on the pickguard, as you would expect, but nothing on the body or neck. I played it a good bit for a couple of months, but once I acquired my dread the playing time on the AJ dropped to almost nothing, and I only played out with it once or twice. Like new condition.

Nitro-cellulose finish, by the way. What else am I forgetting?

Bumping this up so a few more people will see it. This guitar has very similar specs to the Gibson Jackson Browne model, but it's less expensive, has some substantial upgrades, and in my opinion sounds quite a bit better: warmer , louder, more resonant. I like Gibsons, generally, but I've never played one that sounds as good as this guitar - seriously.

Bump. I mentioned that it was a custom build (I did a build thread on it in the custom shop, if you want some idea of the process) - but I didn't stress that this is a unique guitar. John had never build a short-scale dread, nor does he usually do a 1 23/32" nut - so if you are looking for those specs, this is your guitar. We custom designed the rosette to my requests, but John liked it so much that he's done the same one on several newer guitars, so that isn't one-of-a-kind anymore but it's still the only one on an AJ, I think. John likes the combination of walnut and German spruce so there are several out there, but this is the only slope-shouldered dread.

Thanks, Cosycabin. I have a probably irrational fear of selling things on my own. Been burned one too many times, I guess.

Hey, Travis, if you are serious I will personally drive you down to Boerne. Steve went with me when I took the guitar down to HHA and we had a blast. And if you buy that Fischer instead, that's okay. They have some outstanding guitars right now - including mine!

A little bump. If anybody wants to negotiate the price, talk to me. I didn't authorize Heart's Home to dicker, but I could.

One last bump - maybe someone from Austin or San Antonio will see it and make the drive to Boerne. It will be worth your while, I promise: Heart's Home is a fabulous shop with lots of guitars you won't find anywhere else in one place: Charis, Fischer, Lowden, Bourgeios, Allison, Musser, Stonebridge, Rockbridge, and more. But mine is one of the best ones there, especially for the price!
