I watched Sheriff Brown on local Santa Barbara news last night say the 101 will tentatively be open on Monday. We have really suffered the last couple of months.

One option (from North of San Luis) is 101 South to state route 46 to the HWY 5 if you want to make it to LA?

There's nothing worth seeing south of Bixby Creek Bridge, anyway. I'd suggest the various areas of Garapata Beach. Some of the more rugged areas as well as the beach, itself.

And, another shout-out for Schoenberg Guitars. While there, walk around the area and have lunch at the Chinese restaurant, Lily Kai, it has a great view across the bay towards San Francisco. Along with the great food, too.

Sure! Hope I can get one or two NGDs
From SF north, across the GG bridge will get you to Tiburon & Schoenburg's. Great shop, pleasant but congested small town on the bay. From there you can continue north on 101 to Petaluma & Tall Toad Music. TT has (at least last time I was there) lots of inventory, Gibson 5 star dealer. Petaluma is a really pleasant little town. If you're so inclined, Petaluma is not far from Pt Reyes National Seashore. Jaw-dropping beautiful.

The other way from SF, you could do a triangle SF - Palo Alto (Gryphon) - Santa Cruz (Sylvan). Take Highway One along the coast for one leg of that triangle. It's spectacular.

Hope you enjoy your visit!

If you are so inclined, when we went to Petaluma we got a private tour of Mesa Engineering. All we had to do was pre-arrange it with them on the phone before our trip out there.

Forgot to mention Tall Toad! Great little store, but they focus heavily on Gibson, Martin, and Taylor...though they usually have a few interesting used guitars. If you see my Larrivee 000-60 that is still in my dreams, say "Hi."

+1 for this suggestion. I've toured Mesa as well and really enjoyed it.

+1 for Truetone in L.A..

As for McCabe's, it has lost a lot of it's appeal over the past few years, IMO.

At least for the SF Bay area, be aware you will find stores with mind blowing inventories, incredible vintage merchandise, superior staffs, but prices the market will bare, which are high in this affluent part of the world. That there are so many fine shops attests to the business model working here.

Sounds great, but I'm not that into amps... actually if there is this kind of tour to guitar factories (does SCGC have it?) I'd be pretty interested!

SCGC does offer tours on Thursdays and Fridays. You can call or email them to schedule a tour. https://www.santacruzguitar.com/tour-the-shop/

Sylvan is less than 2 miles away. They have a nice selection of SCGC guitars.

Ditto on these. Norman's rare guitars in Tarzana. Gryphon Instruments in the Bay Area.

happy hunting,

We got a tour of the Alembic shop about 11 years ago..................

I know, that's too electric for you, right?

If you a little further south, to SD, I hear the Taylor tour is fantastic.

Oh I wish I could do that, it must be very interesting to see guitars built on assembly lines.

Yeah... too electric that I even never heard the name (but guess I will)
I also checked the Fender's tourists center, it's not far from LA, unfortunately the website says it is closed.
