Also check out Joe Veillette's Gryphon and Terz guitars. Both are tuned higher than normal. The Gryphon is tuned D-D and the terz is A-A.

For the very smallest, I would easily choose the Collings Baby, with the SCGC Firefly second. The Baby has an amazing sound from such a small body... a lot more volume and depth than I expected the first time I played one.

One of the very first Goodall guitars I played was James' "Parlor" guitar; he had just moved back to Fort Bragg, CA., and brought a couple dozen of his instruments down to the new shop for me to "audition"...
He knew I favored larger bodies, so he was just showing me this little guitar as a courtesy... It had old-growth Brazilian rosewood b/s with old-growth redwood for the top; lots of inlay (purfling, soundhole, fretboard, headstock, etc...) - looked like a precious jewel and I was ASTOUNDED by the sound of it! The volume was actually prodigious, especially considering the size of the guitar, and the tone was sweet, fat and just lovely! He smiled at my compliments and said, "You could have this one for $12.5k...". Just a bit out of my price range, I'm afraid... Months later, he offered it to me for $8k... So, I'll toss a short-scale Goodall Parlor into the "small guitar" discussion...

Two really outstanding high end instruments in this size range would be the parlors by either Collings or Froggy Bottom.

I recently picked up a pre-owned Collings Baby 2H which is a 3/4 size OM and have been amazed at the volume and tone that it produces. It does not sound boxy at all which is one of the problems I have had with many other small bodied guitars.

some of the reproductions of historic instruments are very expensive.
i saw this one on ebay, a modern panormo by clive titmuss. it looks pretty cool, has fossil ivory frets (!), and is a bargain at $8260 CND. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Classical-Gui...item460007cfb8 |

Can I throw the word practical in front of high end? If so I'll say CA Cargo. It has some precision my Little Martin has and I'd rather have a mini for beach, camp fires and travel.
I tried a few of the high end ones mentioned here and when I had a Firefly in hand, same for tiny Collings I thought I'd not be getting sun block, birthday cake, sweat and soot on these.

Roy McAllister has made some very fine small instruments. They're all custom, and they're not cheap.
