Default Mark Hanson, Teja Gerken, and Doug Young in-store Concert at Gryphon - Nov. 4.

Very happy to announce that I'll be part of one of Palo Alto, California's Gryphon Stringed Instruments' very occasional in-store house concerts on Saturday, November 4th. It'll be a fingerstyle summit of sorts, with me, Mark Hanson, and Doug Young, so it should be a ton of fun!

On Saturday, November 4th, Gryphon will present fingerstyle masters Mark Hanson, Teja Gerken, and Doug Young in an intimate in-store concert.

Not only are Mark, Teja, and Doug known to fans of contemporary fingestyle guitar through their CDs, performances, and videos, they also share an impressive history of being involved with the guitar as educators (definitely check out Mark’s Gryphon workshops for fingerstyle uke and slack key guitar earlier in the day!), magazine contributors, and book authors.

For this concert, Mark, Teja, and Doug will play in a round-robin format, presenting solo, duet, and trio tunes, and covering a wide range of music that is bound to include everything from Celtic to classical, blues and jazz, to arrangements of pop tunes.

One-time Palo Alto resident and Gryphon instructor Mark Hanson has performed for President Obama, shared the stage with many guitar notables, including Jerry Garcia, Tommy Emmanuel, John Renbourn, and Laurence Juber, worked as a columnist for Frets magazine, founded Accent On Music publishing, and authored over two dozen guitar instruction manuals. In 2005 he won a Grammy for his contributions to the Henry Mancini-Pink Guitar fingerstyle guitar album. Mark looks forward to his return to Gryphon for his Saturday workshops, and for the chance to play with two more guitar notables, Bay Area fingerstyle aces Teja Gerken and Doug Young.

Teja Gerken is no stranger to fans of contemporary fingerstyle guitar. Weaving together influences of folk, jazz, classical, and world music, he is primarily a solo instrumentalist, whose two albums, On My Way, and Postcards, have received widespread acclaim. Teja has been a frequent performer in the Bay Area and beyond for more than 20 years. In his 17-year tenure as an editor at Acoustic Guitar magazine (from 1997 – 2013), he wrote about hundreds of instruments, visited every major guitar manufacturer in North America, and keeps close relationships with the independent lutherie scene. Teja has also written for Guitar Player, Premier Guitar, and Fretboard Journal, and he is the author of The Taylor Guitar Book (Backbeat). As a co-founder of Peghead Nation, he continues to write about and demonstrate guitars and other instruments.

Doug Young is a Bay Area fingerstyle instrumental guitarist, specializing in alternate tunings and melodic playing. Doug has released two CDs, Laurel Mill, and Closing Time which feature his solo guitar compositions and arrangements. He is the author of multiple books, including Mel Bay’s: Understanding DADGAD: For Fingerstyle Guitar and Fiddle Tunes in DADGAD as well as A DADGAD Christmas. He is a Contributing Editor for Acoustic Guitar magazine, and has also written for Fingerstyle Guitar magazine.

$20 Donation for the performers is encouraged.
