Many studios use a tube mic and a tube preamp for vocals, particularly if they are trying to capture/emulate certain vocals recordings from the 1940's through the 1960's.
Yes, tube gear can generate more even order harmonics and more distortion than a solid state signal chain, which translate to folks using terms such as warm, meaty and full to describe the results. |

Interesting discussion on tube pre-amps....I have an old ART TPS II stereo tube pre amp, I know, not in the same league as what you guys are talking about, but out of curiosity I fired it up today and ran the Neumann TLM 102 thru it...it made a big difference in volume and tone quality. I can only imaging what a high end pre would sound like.
This Art II has been sitting here collecting dust for a couple of years now. Somebody over at Gearslutz suggested I upgrade the tube in it. I did and the thing never worked right after that. Today I found the original tube and put it back in and it works great !! So now I have a tube pre-amp to play with, albeit a cheap one.

The ART tube pres were very popular for a while with the folks who were doing studios on a budget. I never used one but I remember reading quite a bit about them going back 10-12 years or so.

I can see why they were popular....it adds quite a bit to my Neumann 102. I'm not gonna say it compares with a high end pre, but I like what I'm hearing. I haven't tested it out with my other mics yet but I will in the next day or so.
Thanks for bringing the topic up !!

Many tube mics sound great plugged into tube preamps! My Manley Voxbox works great with anything I plug into it. So does my Sebatron VMP4000e, and my Presonus/DiMaria ADL600. And many of the all time classic recordings were tube mic into tube pre!

FWIW - Tube mic w/Tube Pre
Aloha,
FWIW, I've had success & zero sonic problems in combining just about every type of pro-level studio mic w/ my Pendulum MDP-1a tube preamp. When I record, I often use that tube pre with a M-G UM-900 Phantom tube LDC or a Mojave MA-200 tube LDC mic on vocals. I've never heard anything amiss with those combo's. I also used to combine that pre w/ Peluso P-28 tube SDC's in stereo on guitar. That was a great combo. You should have no problems w/ combining your Flea 47 with either your Demeter VTMP-2c tube or Hardy M-1 preamps, Jim. It will sound great. A Hui Hou! alohachris Last edited by alohachris; 01-03-2017 at 07:25 PM. |

That's probably true. My curiosity may be driving some of my buying impulse.
