Lennon's "Crippled Inside"...
For a number of days now I have had this song in my head. I no longer have the album it was on I nearly wore out from playing. I've had plenty of luck finding lyric and chord charts on it but nothing to learn the cool intro lick from. I hear the lick in my head but absent the recording I have no idea how accurate I would be trying to work it out by ear. Can anyone point me to a source where I can begin getting this into the repertoire?

Thanks to the two replies! This forum is incredible. I am well on my way to adding this song to my repertoire and have almost mastered my interpretation of the opening lick. Anyone besides me ever think this song was aimed squarely at Paul McC?
"You can shine your shoes and wear a suit You can comb your hair and look quite cute You can wear a collar and a tie One thing you can't hide Is when you're crippled inside" As I recall, this song fell squarely during the time period they were squabbling with each other so famously. |

If anyone was "crippled inside", it was more likely Lennon. Arguably, he wouldn't have been such a genius if he wasn't somewhat damaged. Paul's previous dig at John (on "Too Many People" on "Ram") had been relatively mild, talking about "preaching". (Paul's admitted that John's behaviour in those days "got up his nose".) But Lennon's response was more vicious on "How Do You Sleep", as if he'd been saving up a lot of resentment about Paul over the final years of the Beatles, and Paul's little dig brought it all out. In this case, though, he's managed a more detached sardonic take on it, like he's saying "yeah you're crippled inside, but I don't give a ****!" And supposedly he later admitted, generously, that many of the lyrics of "How Do You Sleep" could refer to himself anyway. Psychologically, while very different people, they shared a personal trauma, both having lost their mothers at a young age. It seems like that bound them together, while also accentuating their differences. When you're very close to someone, and trust them implicitly, tiny disagreements get magnified. Dr JonPR will now see his next patient...
