Default Wall Display

So we are in the midst of a basement remodel and I was a bit shocked when my wife suggested a display wall for my small collection of guitars. I have a vision of using a rustic, barn siding kind of thing as a backdrop. I have maybe 10-11 guitars and will likely do two levels of hangers. The attached photo is what I have in mind. I'd love to see what you all have done in this area. TIA for any shares!

I have read that you don't want to use an outside wall to hang guitars on.
Also, be sure that the humidity in the basement is within the safe range for the guitars.

As nice as this wall looks, I would be very nervous doing it myself.

While it is, of course, personal design preference, I always find that wooden walls distract from the wood of a guitar. I gravitate towards minimal wood, and more space, allowing the guitars to be the feature rather than having the backdrop dominate.

This is what I did several years ago and I am in the same process as you deciding how to get my instrument room together at my new place

I went the slatwall route, makes moving around and changing the spacing between the hangers possible.

I bought some old barnwood that looked like scrap when I got it, however after applying it to my project, it turned out great IMHO. I live in the desert where humidity is a challenge so I build myself a Guitarmidor out of a closet...

I totally agree with this. Rustic board walls are kind of the wall flavor du jour currently so I understand the appeal, but I think simple is best for design and especially for featuring any sort of items for display. As said above, however, it is personal so follow your muse!

I did my basement remodel many years ago. I have all my instruments hanging on ledger boards in my basement music room like Soup's pics above. I have radiant floor heat keeping the room at 70 F and humidifiers maintaining 45 % relative humidity.

Mine are all on an "outside" wall, but in a finished, insulated, climate-controlled below grade basement that wall temperature remains pretty constant. It's not the same at all as an outside wall above the ground where temperature can vary significantly throughout the day and night.

You will notice in the photo (which looks nice) that all the guitars are dark-colored. How will that change when blond tops show? That may have something to do with the statements above which caution against a wood background.

Remember, when exhibited on the wall, you are now going to have to deal with humidity in a different way. Be sure you are fully prepared for this. And, thirdly, you still have to have a place to store the cases.

Thanks for all the input. This is an inner wall and the we have humidification through our HVAC so I'm not particularly worried about those issues. In the deep end of winter I'll still store my acoustic instruments in their humidified cases. I'm going with the barn wood motif and it should add some class to the room. And yes, the need to have room for their cases is an issue but I have another room to hide those

Again, I appreciate all the input. This is what I ended up doing. The room isn't finished yet and I'll add three more String Swing hangers but you get the idea.

Is that a sound-absorbing material on the wall behind the guitars? Looks great!
