When I'm tired I grab the 1.8"
I don't know why but when I'm tired or learning something new with a lot of first position chords often I end up grabbing my Seagull folk with the 1.8" nut.
That little bit of extra real estate helps. It might be the fret board radius too which is 16".

wider is better, at least when it comes to nut width. Now if they would just stretch those string slots to take advantage of that width AND widen the saddle spacing too. Id have one if it wasnt for the saddle.

Im there with ya...my Beneteau is 1 25/32 and it feels like it could be 1 13/16, just 1/32 of an inch makes a world of a difference. 1 3/4 is my go-to but for the complex fingerstyle stuff that little extra space is just...wonderful.

There's an amazing Goodall on Reverb with a 1 7/8" nut that makes me wonder if I can swing it. Now that I think about it I am tired a lot... Hmmm.... Too tired to reach for my wallet.

Well youse guys know I've been rattling on about wider fret-boards for years! = 1 & 13/16" being my favourite and on all my guitars apart from my Waterloo and old Gibson archtop.
1 7 7/8" is fine too. This seems to have proven quite popular:

What is the string spacing on the 1.8 Seagull. My Seagull with 1.72 string spacing is 1.399, just about the same as a 1.69 neck. While looking into this I found comments that the 1.8 string spacing is the same as a 1.75.
What's yours? What about at the saddle? Mine's 2.125. |

I pretty much play my Blueridge exclusively now because of the 1 7/8" nut and 2 5/16" bridge. My 1 3/4" nut guitars are sadly collecting dust.
I find the Blueridge is good for both fingerstyle and strumming. Chords changes are faster and difficult shapes are easier. I did have trouble with thumb-over and Barre chords. Different fingerings have gotten me around most of the thumb over issues, and changing my strings for 11s have fixed the difficulty I was having with Barre chords. I do wish there were more options for guitars with wider nut and bridge spacings. |

Spec sheets can be wrong anyway. Seagull says the nut is 1.72, my Starrett digital caliper says 1.76. Martin says the nut on my Road Series is 1.75, I get 1.73. Sting spacing; they say 1.5, I get 1.53.
I'm getting a new Tusq 1.75 nut for the Seagull with 1.496 spacing. With a little fitting, it should work out just right. |
