Laurent has been generously documenting his build process and providing me with a journal of photos. I thought by sharing them, it would be helpful for anyone considering commissioning a guitar with him in the future. The differences in design and construction between luthiers is sometimes a bit elusive prospectively. Build threads like the ones that we post here can serve an important vehicle to highlight these distinctions.

Brondel Update 10
Laurent installed the matching Honduran Mahogany bindings and purflings today. For the top purflings he used his signature ebony/maple arrow motif to match the back strip. For the side and back purflings, a simple ebony/maple/ebony purfling to help define the guitar's edges. For the end graft, he used Brazilian Rosewood to match the bridge, fingerboard, peghead veneers and tuner buttons.

Brondel Update 11
Scraping the matching Honduran Mahogany bindings. Also, a pile of neck shavings on the floor of the shop.
The matching Honduran Mahogany binding edges are defined by simple maple/ebony/maple purflings. Hand shaping the Honduran Mahogany neck... The maple purfled BRW peghead veneers... Here it is assembled, pre-finish. You can begin to now see where the large block mottle figure of the Honduran Mahogany is going to go once under oil varnish. Laurent's signature "arrow motif" can be seen in the rosette, top purfling and back strip. A BRW heel plate was installed to match the BRW peghead veneers. Finally, here is what the figure in the Honduran Mahogany looks like with some sealer applied.

Some of the very best mahogany I have ever seen.
Are you going to get those numbers inlaid into the fretboard? Cheers, Steve |

No Real Update: Just Reflecting
Laurent has begun his oil varnish finishing process. He will apply 7-10 coats of oil varnish and then allow it to cure for about a month before completing the guitar. I may have one more round of photos to share once he gets 3-4 coats on (tbd). Otherwise, updates will be fairly quiet until early November.
I am incredibly pleased with: 1) how the figure in the mahogany is beginning to develop with some sealer applied; 2) The choice to go with matching mahogany bindings vs. contrasting wood binding and define the edges with the contrasting purflings and Laurent's marquetry.

Bob, it looks magnificent. Have you ever asked Laurent to what extent his aesthetic was influenced by Stefan Sobell? His headstock and purfling have a distant echo of Stefan's:

I do see an aesthetic influence of Stefan's work in a number of Laurent's design features. That being said, if you look under the hood of a Sobell and play one, you will find them to be quite different in their bracing and tonality from a Brondel. Laurent did an interview with Guitarbench a few years ago where he touched upon how Stefan's work influenced him and some contrasts between their work.
