Default AER effects loop

Should I always aim to have my effects pedal(s) in the Send/Return loop of my AER amp? Or is there any merits to having them pre-amp?

One thing I've been thinking about is the fact that I prefer the use of the XLR input with my taylor which seems to imply I should have the effects pedals in the send/return.

Is this the best way?

Thanks
Gerry
