Default Can you recommend a Slack key guitar teacher

Have checked out a few people online, but am thinking that it would be smarter to get some personal recommendations from my AGF comrades.

I’m hoping to find someone who does lessons via Zoom (or similar) who would meet with me every two weeks.

While I am a beginner in regards to slack key, I have some 12 years experience with finger picking (and have taken lessons much of that time), know a couple of songs in Open G tuning (called Taro Patch tuning in Hawaii), and have learned a version of “Kealoha” using a YouTube video. So I am probably aiming to start as an “advanced beginner”, or maybe an intermediate level with some remedial lessons that might touch upon some of the foundational stuff for slack key.

It would be great if I found a teacher in the Eastern US (6 hour time difference between HI and MA limits the time slots that might work), and i know that Zoom and other applications seem to work better when there isn’t as much physical distance involved, but I welcome names of anyone who is a good teacher, even those in Hawaii.

If you haven't done so already, do check out AGF's own Fran Guidry's slack key website for instructional videos and other information.

Ozzie Kotani is a marvelous teacher but his site doesn't indicate if he does Zoom lessons. He does have contact info though:

https://ozziekotani.com/

Harry Koizumi is also on O`ahu, also doesn't mention Zoom, does have contact info:

https://harrykoizumi.com/lessons/

Mark Hanson is in Portland, I think, and mentions Skype lessons. He's written a very useful book so I'm confident that he has some insight into slack key but I've had no personal contact with him:

Keola Beamer has a site with lots of study material, I don't know if you does any direct instruction, but he lives in Lahaina, Maui so he is likely committed to the recovery effort there in the near future.

Finding a slack key teacher can be quite a challenge, so if you want to pursue other options I can recommend the Homespun Music lessons with Led Kaapana. Their website doesn't offer a direct link but the material is pretty easy to find.

And Ray Kane did a lovely video of many of his classics, no tab or breakdown but nice clear video of his playing and it's all now up on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL2ywJa270g

Let me know if you're interested in more blather, opinions, etc. and best wishes on your pursuit.

Fran

Jeff Peterson! He’s wonderful. https://jeffpetersonguitar.com/

I don't know if he'd do private lessons, but I'd ask him. He's giving a concert in Orange County, CA this weekend. His website and lessons are amazing. He does weekly songs online and has hundreds of songs with very detailed lessons in every level on his site.

Thanks for all the recommendations….most are new to me. Time for me to sift through the details….though I still welcome more recommendations.
