Tone-Gard
I am borrowing a Tone-Gard from a friend and considering buying one. It definitely increases volume and sustain a bit.
Any opinions out there. Plusses / minuses.

I have played bluegrass mandolin as well as bluegrass guitar. I am convinced that Tone Guards are a great piece of kit for mandolin and that they do exactly what they are meant to do, add volume and projection. I have never had a mandolin where a Tone Guard didn’t make a difference in volume.

I recommend them. I had a couple custom gards built for non-standard sized instruments and plan on a few more.

A tone guard IMHO is essential. I love mine and would not play without it.

Yes, the general opinion seems positive and at a couple hours playing I think I am sold.
The guy I borrowed it from of not do enthusiastic, hence the availability of it to borrow.

I'm a fan. At the very least it helps you hear yourself better, which is great when banjos are involved.

Minuses are that they are hideously ugly... That being said, if you want to hear the difference you can simply pull the mando out so that back isn't touching your body and there is a noticeable increase in volume and sustain. I will likely get one myself at some point, ugliness aside.

assuming your getting this for a mandolin.
you can do a simple test at home. sit on the couch lay the mandolin on your belly and play blackberry blossom. then sit up on the couch and get the mandolin between you legs and the back off your body. Play blackberry blossom again. this is what a tonegard will do for you. you can also learn to play the instrument like this and save some bucks. it's all muscle memory. |
