Can You Identify This Guitar?
Left end. Identify, and tell me what you can about it? Thanks!

Looks like a Gibson ES-125T. Pickguard looks a little more like the Epiphone Granada version. Thin line hollow body with a single coil pickup.

Thanks, HHP! It looks a bit different from the ES 125T that I had seen personally, and even from the Epi versions I've seen online. That's the best guess I've heard so far. Much appreciated!

That guitar is definitely a Gibson ES-120T, with its famous "hound's ear" pickguard / electronics case. It was Gibson's lowest-grade hollowbody guitar in the early 1960's. It only had the one visible f-hole and a single Melody Maker single-coil pickup. Despite its low position in the Gibson-pecking order it was made to Gibson's standards. It has a lively and surprisingly loud acoustic tone and thanks to its low-powered pickup a unique sound when plugged in. They are terrific guitars and you never know who you might see playing one:
I have the Epiphone version which was called "The Granada." It too was made in the Kalamazoo Gibson plant in 1963. My parents bought it new for me as a graduation present in 1964. This thing is beyond wonderful, and has never even needed a truss rod adjustment In the 51 years I have owned it. Personally I like the cream colored pickguard better, but YMMV. |

the es120t, and the epiphone version, will have a very unique sound since that pickup was only used in solid body guitars otherwise.

Thanks, my friends. Another friend was considering buying the one in that first picture, but against it. He's a rank beginner, and thought an inexpensive nylon string guitar would be easier on his fingertips, and since the Gibson sold for nearly $700, on his wallet as well.

Beat me to it, I have a 1963 Gibson 125T on lay-a-way and the sucky part is it's missing the pickguard. An original one is $300-$400 and a replica is around $60.
Has the one P90, volume and tone knob. What do you guys who own these early guitar have for strings? James Bay uses a jazz set I believe D'Addario 13-56 electric with his 1966 Epi Century.

Brought back memories, Cotten. Definitely a Gibson 120T--I'm thinking the T stood for "Thin." It was the 125T's baby brother, having a melody maker single coil rather than a dog-eared P 90.
I had a Granada. Wish I still did, but such is life.
