Martin backpacker vs parlor size for campfire...
I mean not for campfire but singing around campfire.
Does the Martin backpacker or its likes do the job compared to a parlor size like Yamaha FS700S? Anyone used Martin backpacker for jamming around the campfire or outdoors in a gathering?

I've played a backpacker once in GC. I had nightmares for weeks. Give me a kazoo any day over that.

The backpacker has its purpose (solo practice on the go, low-volume scenarios, truly primitive camping) but it really is an instrument of last resort. If you are able to pack in more than literally a single backpack, you will likely be better served with other (larger) options.

I really don't like the backpacker's sound.

I own the Martin LX1 "Little Martin" for travel/camping. It works great, way better than the backpacker. Comes with a great little gig bag too.

I made the mistake of buying a Martin Backpacker.
Horrible anemic sound. Horrible ergonomics; somehow worse even than the Ovation bowl back ... you have to use a strap. Get a Baby Taylor, or better yet a Big Baby. I gots me two Big Babies! They have a FULL scale of 25.5". The mysteriously-popular GS-Mini's scale is a full 2 inches shorter, which may explain why the strings feel floppy and the tone, bass, and projection sufferers compared to the TBB. ... but it does look prettier. I have a Baby Taylor and really think it's a fantastic guitar for the price. It's perfect for travel/camping and has a great tone. It comes with a nice gig bag also.

Martin backpacker
It's only purpose for me was to hang on the wall for a conversation piece. Trying to play it was very unpleasant..........

Mystery, as everyone else has told you already, a parlor-sized guitar will give you much better tone and far more musical satisfaction than a Martin Backpacker guitar will. The Little Martins are a much better option, as are the Baby Taylor and - even better - the Taylor GS Mini.
Even a cheap pawnshop classical guitar will give you a better tone than a Martin Backpacker. Sad, but true. Hope this helps. Wade Hampton Miller |

Used 00CXAE. It's a weather-proof Martin and you can use it to set your drinks down on when not playing - seriously. I have one. I put a different nut on it with slots for a nylon string and use it that way now. It's my new slime bar guitar and portable table (probably cleaner than a slime bar table).

Definitely a parlor + you will have a large selection to choose from.

I bought a Gretsch Jim Dandy for $160 and a Recording King Dirty Thirties parlor for $99. I would choose either of them in a heartbeat over the Backpacker.

My backpacker is hanging on the wall, doesn't even have strings.
My Jim Dandy is next to the chair where I can reach it. 1 Mastiff, 2 Beagles, and 2 granddaughters here with me, and no worries! One Beagles dropped a large water buffalo horn chew on it last month, chipped the finish but no damage structurally. At the price, durability, and fun, I'd buy another if it somehow did get broken. |
