Default Help with PC playback issues....

**** UPDATE - JUST FIGURED IT OUT ****

I'll try to keep this as brief as I can - and please note, I'm not a techno guy by any means.

My home recordings sound great on every system or player I play them back on except my 7-8 year old Dell PC (Windows 7 home premium) It's a bummer because I have a nice Denon/B&W system on my desk hooked up to this computer. I should also note that at one time, they sounded fine on this computer too.

What happens is any harmony vocals or solos that I've "panned" to one channel or another are all but missing, just a hint of the sound.

I've used Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and just this morning I downloaded Mozilla Firefox and it's the same.

Is this something to do with my "sound card" (I know the term, but not "what" it is, by the way)

Any ideas?

Something in your sound card settings has changed. Which browser you use does not matter. What sound card is in that computer? - go in device manager or download and run Belarc Adviser to find out. https://www.belarc.com/en/products_belarc_advisor

Hmmm ... could it be a cable issue (or jack)? Are you using TRS (stereo) cable between your line out on the PC and your listening device? If using a Y-cable does the audio change if you swap L/R?

An aside: I use a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 interface here. I do my recording on a Tascam DP24 and all my mixing, editing, mastering on my iMac. The interface serves mostly as an external sound card (but much better than the internal Mac sound card). You might want to think about it. A simple 2x2 interface can be had pretty inexpensively these days.

just figured it out - and feeling a bit silly. When I moved two years ago, I changed some of my cables. The Y cable (3.5mm to dual RCA from the back of the PC to the stereo RCA cable that goes to the Denon receiver is a mono, not stereo - sheesh!!!

Gotta fix that NOW!!!!!

Ha! It's those little things that'll get you. It's a good rule of thumb, when trouble-shooting, to work from the last thing you changed. Glad you got it sorted.

Yeah - with things I have going on right now (aging/ailing parent issues) I can't remember what I did yesterday let alone two years ago. I actually used to install elaborate home stereo systems for a living - you'd think I'd have paid better attention to that......

Murphy's law. Happens a lot in recording also.
