Default Custom Guitar Humidor

Hi all,

This thread "could have" been originally posted here... maybe..., but my original post was not the build part of it. Anyhow, I though that a lot of you folks would find this interesting, plus I'm not ashamed to say that I am proud of the results.

For the original thread, check out here... http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...81#post4230181

In the meantime, here is a teaser...

What are you using inside for humidification / dehumidification, and how is it regulated? Would LOVE to build something like that!!!

Steve

No need for dehumidification, for I am in Las Vegas. I ended up using a La Veil cigar humidifier. It is rated for 50 square feet (I'm double that), however that is for 70% humidity. They offer a "slave" unit that doubles the capacity, but I am finding I don't need it. It keeps it at 40-45% no problem. It has a built in switch that shuts off when the the RH reaches the desired level.

Cool room! ...or maybe "nice properly wet room" should be the more appropriate response. I also thought nice guitars, and when I looked closer I thought the one in the middle looked liked ours. Sorry I'm slow on the uptake and on reading guitar bylines. It's nice to know they're being well taken care of. That makes at least 2 Kinnairds in Vegas. A couple more and it will make sense to have a reunion out there!

I just revisited this thread, and hadn't noticed your reply before it quickly vanished from the first page.

Yes, I am proud to own a Kinnaird! I have heard of both you and your brother, and even saw your guitars at Healdsburg in 2013. Unfortunately, I didn't try one there. I had a nice Goodall for sale/trade and another AGF'er offered the Kinnaird for trade. Even offered a free no-commitment trial period. I was smitten with its playability and tone. In fact it is my favorite 6 string I have ever had up to this point and it gets equal attention along with my 8 string Stehr. It's simply a wonderful and elegant guitar. I look forward to meeting the both of you in Memphis next year.

Happy New Year!!

Default Great room

That is a great idea. I am moving to southern Texas in a couple of years and it is quite dry there, I may need to copy you on your room! I even like the wood you have on the walls. Is that reclaimed wood from somewhere? The whole room is beautiful especially with the wall hangings you chose...

Thanks Tom. Yes, the wood came from a local supplier that fancies themselves as a reclaimed barn-wood specialist www.woodstockap.com. They cut each board tongue and groove, however putting them together was sometimes difficult due to the fact that the woods are all different thicknesses and some are more brittle (weathered) than others. I was skeptical at first because when I picked it all up, it looked like a bunch of piles of crap wood. However, once you start putting them up, they look great. I couldn't be happier.

Also, extremely nice people to work with.

I agree, it looks fantastic. I went back to your original thread and absolutely love the whole look. The doors look fantastic, the lighting is super cool, and the way it displays the guitars is better than most upscale guitar stores I have been in. It really looks good in your house too, not an eyesore which it could have been, on the contrary it is a focal point of interest to people coming in. It is perfect for the guitars and displays them as the works of art that they are...love the Kinnaird in particular.

I really like the look of the wood, it complements the guitars.

On more ovf a build note, I live in what sometimes feels like the northern wasteland, keeping my house above 20% RH when it is -20 outside causes moisture problems in the spring time when it starts melting in your attic in your walls. I want to vapor barrier my workshop area and at least bring that up to the 40% level but for now I took a shelf of one of my workbenches and enclosed it with foam board. I stuck a fan in there and it is blowing on a plate of water. There is leakage out so I have to add a cup of water every few days but I am hydrating the wood for my next guitar.

Very low tech, I have a temperature and humidity display reading out the conditions and the foam board that I use to close up that area has a little window of clear plastic taped on the board. It has been holding about 37 - 40% since the wood the bench is made of absorbed its share of humidity. I plan to take the wood out, work on it on the bench and when I am finished for the day put it back under the bench for a drink of water. Some building and clamping will negate it being tucked in for the night but it should keep the wood sort of in the happy zone for construction. I can easily put a full size guitar in so I should be able to stay out of trouble for the winter.

Which is the guitar in the center just above and right to the elephant? A Stehr I guess but I couldn't tell from your signature which one.

Default Guitar to Right of Elephant

Has the Stehr signature leaf on the headstock and the signature box fret markers on the edge of the fingerboard.........

Your guess appears to be a good one.

The one just above and slightly to the right of the elephant is the Kinnaird (Stephen). The one directly above the Lion is the Stehr.

Yes the one in the middle on the top row is the Kinnaird, to the left of that is the R. Taylor, the one to the right is the 8 string Stehr, and the one on the bottom right is also a Stehr. Missing in the picture is my Lucky Strike Stehr. It's back a Joel's getting a neck reset. It is a wonderful guitar too, however I had a tough time keeping it humidified, hence the neck reset. This issue is what caused me to look into alternative ways to keep my guitars humidified. That's how the "Guitarmidor" was born.. I hope to have the LS back in the coming weeks/months.

Missing in my sig, but in the picture (bottom right wall) is a Gibson Epiphone laminated guitar. My first acoustic guitar. It is cracked due to falling out of a truck onto a road once when I was moving in college.
