Default Mowry Archtops

Stumbled upon this Mowry guy, looks like he builds a nice archtop, he is kinda new to the trade and his lead time is long and cost is way to high.. 6500.00.

I remember Colin Meloy playing a Mowry bouzouki.

Here's a Mowry interview. http://www.fretboardjournal.com/feat...ed-instruments

Hi Brian,

I would actually disagree. I think his prices are spot on, and probably on the fair end of the scale. Campellone is the only established luthier (though I'm sure there are others) that I can think of with lower entry pricing. And I think what Mark does is phenomenal, and I hope he sticks to his pricing strategy.

Andrew Mowry is well known in the mandolin circles, and all reviews and feedback that I've received indicate that he makes an absolute top-shelf, super high quality instrument. He's made less guitars, but certainly seems to know what he's doing. I've spoken with him, and he was very knowledgeable and nice. And keep in mind - his listed price includes your choice of materials, finishes, etc. Many luthiers will nickel and dime you to death with options and upgrades. When I spoke to Andrew, my impression was that you could choose almost any options that you wanted (within reason, I'm sure) for that base price. I had a particular guitar in mind, and he even offered to throw in a custom inlay that I envisioned at no additional charge.

Unfortunately, that commission never moved forward. I still dream of it though. If I were going to commission a new archtop with any luthier, it would likely be Mowry.

His work looks wonderful. Extremely clean. His woods are insanely nice. Of course it's all about the sound, but it looks like great work. Turning out a top-quality carved instrument for $6500 is very fair.

One of the greatest regrets in my musical life was trading a Mowry Octave Mandolin for a Michael Dunn guitar. (Addendum: The Dunn guitar was also spectacular but I miss my Mowry Octave Mandolin!).

The Mowry was exceptional in every way. Fit, finish, tone, playability. Just superb. His prices exclude many of us, but if I ever have another chance at a Mowry instrument I'll do whatever I have to do to get one.

Yes, his prices appear high but his instruments are worth every cent, in my opinion.

Got a Mowry Octave mandolin you'd like to sell me?

Thanks for the tip. Checked it out. Right now, it's beyond my means. Someday.

Is that yours? I know that you either own or did own a similar Mowry. Care to share your thoughts on his instruments?
