New Mayor for our city.
I've just received an invitation to the ceremony.
Apparently ther earliest records of this ceremony have been lost/destroyed/mislaid. They only go back to 1226! I consider this an appalling breach in ourcivic administration! After all the city was already established when the Romans turned up in AD 43! |

What town do you live in? I've always been fascinated by English history.

Quote:
Paper was invented around 200 AD, so it's likely that their records where on paper. But paper does not last forever, since it's made from plant fiber. I don't imagine they used stone tablets. Imagine a file cabinet for filing away stone tablets. If that thing fell over, it could be deadly. Maybe they got rid of the old records because they were just too dangerous to keep filed. And you can't just leave piles of stone tablets out for people to stub their toes on. Record keeping... It's always been a problem. I remembering seeing a tablet outside an old church (St. Peter's) in Market Bosworth in England that said that the front of the church dated from the 13th century. I thought it was pretty remarkable. I love seeing a piece of history like that. - Glenn

Hi, partly a joke - as I believe our records office has documents going back to the 11th century - on parchment of course.
Within a couple of miles of where I live they found remains of humans (Homo heidelbergensis) and butchered rhinoceros and bear, thought to be about 500,000 years old. (Happy birthday to you!) Settlements of some sort have been in/on this area way into re-history, and tat the time of the Roman invasion ther were two tribes living in this area - the Belgea and the Regenses - and perhaps the Atrebates. They chose NOT to fight the Romans and so we have so much evidence of the Romans that you can buy Roman coins and rings and toga brooches in the local shops - or just dig 'em up in the local fields. Someone asked me where I am ...... well I am 65 miles west of where the Normans came ashore in 1066, and 20 miles east of where Nelson's ship is. |

Getting back on topic, hope it was a wonderful ceremony - and that your people have better luck than we've had the last dozen years or so...
