I doubt people have changed much. I can imagine a Cro Magnon family in their cave complaining about the family in the next cave drumming on logs all night. Biggest difference is that Stupid is not as expensive as it used to be so there's probably more of it.

Maybe we should just clarify our terms at this juncture. By "the world," do we mean the USA?

Yesterday , I learned why I had done no work for a certain school district in over 2 years . I had been vindictively banned because I dared to stand my ground with an Elementary school principal . I did it directly , intelligently and with absolute courtesy and got stabbed in the back because I rightfully stood fast against her angry authoritarianism when I had done nothing wrong . This kind of thing has far too much of a foothold . I was recently contacted again by the maintenance department and will hopefully be able to renew a very good long term business relationship . Just not at her school . I sure would love to try to make peace with her , but I believe that doing so would only create more issues . We do take notice to the bad actors far more than those that are not . Maybe that is why The Grit is no longer published . |

Must be. Certainly no anger in places like the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. There's some surly individuals in Lichtenstein.

Nice smart-bottom reply, but we have already heard that Switzerland is experiencing no such surge in citizen petulance. Also, most of the replies here are citing exmaples from the US.

They are Chimpanzees and humans. We are hunter gatherers who need open spaces and resources ...and leaders. Shortage of resources, or jealousy of the resources of others The desire to replace leaders The instinct to destroy the genes/offspring of others to "protect" your genes etc. Simple access to more females is also a common driver. We are a dangerous species, and we have less control over our instincts than we may think. Someone mentioned world wide news media which makes us aware of what is happening, all the wars, going on at any time. We are a group/tribal/herd species, and we have a tendency to attack smaller groups. evidence of coalitionary violence goes back to the Thallheim death pit, (at least) but probably far further back. Pressures on our natural environment -0 high population density and lack of resources will often tip us over. I believe that violence is a part of our makeup, and when external influences occur we can change our personality. When I was in my pre-teen and treens I had a very short temper, and I remember that "red mist" feeling very well - it scared me. I am re-listening to a BBC programme called "The Origins Of War" which pretty much re-enforces my beliefs. |

The population of the U.S. (where I live) has doubled since I was born 64 years ago. Double the number of rats in a cage and the number of conflicts between rats increases exponentially (IIRC from my undergrad Sociology 101). Chances are probably even greater for conflict (angry rats) if one doesn't add more sewer pipes to the cage (infrastructure) at a rate comparable to population growth. In addition, with a random population of rats in a cage one can expect a certain percentage to have a predilection to aberrant behavior. Let's represent the number of aggressive/psychopathic/sociopathic rodents in that population as "X". Now double the size of the rat population in the cage and that number becomes "2X". Sure the percentage of aberrant individuals has remained constant but the actual numbers of aggressive rats running around in the same space has doubled and the chances of a normal rat encountering one has increased. In terms of humans, add the fact that 64 years ago every aggressive/violent interaction was not reported, filmed or scrutinized in the way it is today and the perception of the problem is greater than the actual increase in the problem. Of course none of this makes it seem any less crazy.

Most of the people on the forum live in the US. I can imagine plenty of po'd folks in Venezuela who can't get toilet paper. Can't be but so bad here given the lengths people go to to get here. Don't really see people risking their lives crossing a desert without water to get into Mexico.

And people post (often anonymously) all kinds of interesting (and sometimes offensive) stuff on internet forums. There was nothing analogous to this 30 years ago...so the world has definitely changed in profound way in the past 20 or 30 years, and what we take in day after day has also changed quite fundamentally. With these new inputs that have fewer layers of filtering, It can appear that the only thing in the world is human stupidity, human anger, and animal charm. One has to "get out on the ground" to see the other, more ordinary realities: people being courteous, people being kind, people just living lives without fanfare, animals behaving like mere animals. Has the world become angrier? Perhaps. An easier question: has our vantage point for viewing the world changed? The answer: undeniably. And last question: Has the U.S. changed in ways that differ significantly from other countries, or does it just reflect a greater saturation of the factors that have created a difficult illusion? I dont have an answer for that.... |

I agree with this, I just think we hear about it more now. My world and the people in it aren't any angrier that I can discern.

Worldwide, violent crimes are down, war is down, standard of living is higher than it's ever been, people are more educated than ever before, people are living longer than ever, more have access to healthcare than ever, etc. Sure, there are some pockets of bad but I think we only hear about the bad stuff so we think things are worse than they really are.

I firmly believe a society is reflective of its leadership, whether it is a single nuclear family, a congregation, an organization, a state, or a nation of states. If that leadership provides a sound fiscal house and projects that fiscal order, if that leadership projects a strong moral and ethical standards, you will have a society that reflects those values.
Are there other factors that steer a society, absolutely. But the absolute fundamental is the leadership of the society. |

So, part of me believes that a lot of it is an illusion created by the media. But, another part of me firmly believes that the illusion, in turn, creates real anger. People being less trusting and more accusatory and blaming of others simply BECAUSE of the media's illusion mongering.

Hi guys.....are you sure you really know what violence is ? Let me tell you ... Every year in Brazil, according officials, government numbers, around 57 to 60 THOUSAND people are murdered by gun fire (pistols etc..) .... This is outrageous, unbearable, but like someone above said, crime begins with leaders above us. People who kill with their cars are not in this group, among other categories. We can be compared only to México, Venezuela, African republics. Even war conflicts around the world do not kill as much as people are killed here.
yeah, we need more therapists.
