Yamaha FG800 nut change
Has anyone changed out their FG nut to a wider nut with good success ?
I would like another mm or better on my FG and it looks like I have enough space/neck to do it. Might push strings close to edge but it's worth a try. If anyone has dine it, where did you get nut and did it slide right in? I was hoping an L series nut might work. Thanks Jed |

I used a Tusq 1 3/4" on an FG700S. Strings very close to edge, require sanding and fitting. Totally worth the $15.

You can get your local tech guy to do it with whatever material you want for under $40.00.

Do you have the nut files?

If you sand the bottom to get the height right, there's not much slot filing, if any, to do. I use burning torch tip cleaners for filing nut slots. The majority of the filing is for the overall (length) width--almost 1/8" off each side.

I'm hoping the L series nut will fit. Waiting on Yamaha to respond before I place the order. Looks like same measurement other than 1.5 mm or so wider.

Anyone know if the FG nut is glued or if slides out like L series?

In that case, I would do them myself as well. That's the biggest cost to changing the nut. You could just get a blank nut and sand it to the right height and file the nut slots.

They have little if any glue. I give them a little bump with the plastic rounded edge of a Swiss Army knife and they usually pop right out.

Why wait on them? And for plastic? The Tusq ones are $13-$16 anywhere you can find them and the self lubricating property sells me on them. No tuning issues at all.

I was just trying to match up exactly the L series string spacing to the FG. And it will go in without filing. Looking for a 44mm Tusq now online with the exact string spacing in my L series. Will probably order both.
