I recently bought a Yamaha FSX800c and really like this guitar. It has become my favorite for acoustic playing. But, I find the preamp a little lacking for amplified band use.

Has anyone upgraded the electronics in a Yamaha FG or FS series guitar?

Thanks in advance,
paulin

Anybody using a gig bag for the FS Yamahas? If so, which one?

Default Always Good Info

Late congratulations. Thank you for the input from members here. I've been looking at the FS830 for a while, in part because of the smaller body than typical dreadnoughts. A big part has been deciding on which of the 3 finish options. You all provide great information and it is appreciated.

What makes you prefer this $299 guitar over your $3500 Taylor 814CE? Also did you modify the nut or saddle or get a professional setup - things that would maybe make it sound a little better than out of the store?

I was in a Sam Ash recently. They had one new and one used. Sam Ash has a lot of pricey guitars within reach. I kept drifting back to those 2 yamahas.

The Taylor is a great sounding, well built guitar, although I don't love the ES1.3 pickup/preamp which limits my playing out with it as I don't want to carry a lot of external pedals, etc. I do, however, like recording with it using a good external mic.

The Yamaha FSX800C I bought on a whim. I was just wandering round a mom and pop music store and discovered Yamaha guitars. The FSX800C played so easily, fit me so well and sounded so good I just had to have it. I knew it would be a good jam session, practice and small gig guitar. Yes, I eventually upgraded the nut and saddle to Tusq which sounds to me a little compressed compared to the Urea factory materials but still quite pleasing to my ear.

I recently bought a Martin 000-15M, my first Martin. I really think it has the sweetest sound of any of my guitars past or present. I use this guitar for serious gigs, shows, etc.

In summary, for me, I like the 000-15M, then the FSX800C, then the 814ce and the GS Mini (for camping and travel) in that order. Just my preference.

Paul

I have the 830's previous generation, the FSX730SC. It is a GREAT guitar. Love the action, the electronics, good bass, nice shimmer on the trebs, and the neck feels great. I have pricier guitars, but I would not call them nicer sounding. Maybe by just a smidge. Love my yammie. Enjoy yours!

A testament to Yamaha FG series that they are played by those who own much more expensive guitars.
