Josie arrived and she is a true beauty. The wood's appearance is nuts!

Mark was right that this particular mahogany is highly musical. The guitar has wonderful sustain, tonal warmth and clarity, and it is distinguished from my Greta by being amazingly balanced in terms of tone and volume across the strings and up-and-down the neck. The fanned frets are a breeze to get used to and the wedge-shaped body does indeed offer much needed comfort for the right shoulder, especially given the larger sized of this body.

I've posted a video of Josie in action over on the Show and Tell page. For a first recording the choice was an instrumental arrangement of Autumn Leaves directly inspired by Eva Cassidy's haunting vocal version:

Thanks for listening and also for following Mark's built thread. He is a remarkable artisan and a complete joy to work with on a custom guitar.

Wow. It sounds killer! I was initially so eager to hear it I just played the youtube video on my laptop and was thinking it sounded great but just wasn't what you were describing, the clarity was there but it seemed surprisingly bright.
I then went over to my monitor speakers and listened again. Your description suddenly became spot on. The mahogany-ness reappeared along with a smoothness to go with that clarity which stayed. I guess it might be a good thing that regardless of what speakers you listen through, the clarity of it is obvious.
Laptop speakers are never the best way to hear something, and it always surprises my just how inaccurate they are and how much of the frequency spectrum gets lost when I switch between them and proper speakers.

After listening to that guitar I decided not to run a comparison with this and the guitar I built myself and recently did a recording of, because I always liked the way mine sounded and i'm enjoying playing it at the moment (even though my playing is terrible) but if I compared the 2 directly I think mine may just become a piece of wall art.

also, nice playing

David

David, I remember your first build well. That guitar is a real beauty and the new thread will be fun to follow as well. Were I to build one, it would not even sound as good as a cardboard box! Keep up the great work.

Thanks for putting up the recording ukejon! I'm proud of the job we did on this one. Doing the fan fret was and important step to differentiate this guitar from your cedar/rosewood Greta. It has the all mahogany tone without giving up balance and responsiveness. Of course, I knew right from the start this was a great set of mahogany.

I still have enough to do another all hog from the original billet if anyone else would like to compliment their rosewood guitar!

Mark
