Default US made Ovation 1868 natural top

USA made Ovation 1868 brown bowl Elite from 1991 that is in near mint condition. Only issue is a small ding on the top at the treble upper bout (pictured, and looks much worse in the pic than in person). Factory OP24 electronics that work perfectly. 1 11/16 nut, std scale. A great example of Ovation guitars from back in their "heyday". Comes with OHSC, with key and all case candy. Price reduced 500.00 OBO shipped, insured, paypaled conn US.

Jim,

Those of us that have owned Ovations in the past know they sound really good plugged it. How is this one when played without amplification? Could you make a stab at describing? I know Ovations don't get much love on the AGF, but I look at them as in their own niche. If Paul Simon thought the instrument was good enough to play live before a half a million people (Concert in Central Park circa 1980), who am I to argue?

Thanks for the question Frank.
I've owned pretty well every configuration Ovation has produced (click on my sig line) and I won't lie. Unplugged it sounds thin compared to the same size wood guitar, but it is a shallow bowl, so I would expect that. Plugged in it sounds great. I think the OP 24 is one of the best preamps Ovation has offered. I've played it at church a few times and it always sounded like what most would expect a wood guitar to sound like, but is much less taxing on the body because of it's slim profile. People have an issue with deep bowl Ovations, because of the round back meeting the round front that most of us have acquired over the years. Sitting with a deep bowl is kind of like trying to hold a greased pig in your lap. The shallow bowl eliminates that issue. Makes a great gigging guitar because of it's durability and rock steady neck. BTW, the neck is one of the most playable I've encountered. Unplugged it sounds much like my Gibson Blues King or any other small body wood guitar, just not as boxy. That's about as close as I can come in comparison for anyone who hasn't played a shallow body Ovation.
