Default Blackbird Rider

Hello everyone,

I found this forum just recently and wanted to thank you all: it's been very helpful to read the many discussions about different types of carbon fiber guitars as I make a decision about buying a new guitar. I decided to go with the Blackbird Rider steel string, because of the combination of good sound quality and the lightweight, smaller body. A lighter weight is crucial for me - I have two lovely guitars but cannot carry them anywhere (because of physical disabilities), so only play them at home. I miss being able to take a guitar with me across town or on a day or weekend trip to nearby islands. Musical friends could be anywhere, and I like to be ready to play if I meet them!

Thanks again to all. It's great to find a forum with so many people who appreciate guitars!

Tricia

I also have a Blackbird Steel Rider which I bought because of it's weight and tone. I, too, can no longer carry heavy guitars around. The nice thing about the Blackbird Steel Rider is that you don't sacrifice tone and playability because of having a lighter guitar. Not only that, it sounds amazing when amplified. It has become my main guitar for playing out!

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. I love mine so much that I ordered a Blackbird Nylon Rider to go with it:-)
Best,
Barb

Great choice, I think the best carbon travel guitar. Congrates. Steve

Barb, so great to hear what an excellent experience you've had with it! And wonderful you're getting the nylon string one too. For amplification, do you use a mic or did you get the built in pickup? I didn't order the pickup (I have them on my other guitars and have never used them - always just end up using mics) but wondered if it might be a good idea in this case. (I just ordered mine yesterday so I imagine I could adjust the order if need be.)

Steve, thanks for the comment. I'm so excited about getting this guitar!

Hi Tricia,
I have the MiSi system in the Steel Rider. It adds minimal weight to the guitar. If you think that you will ever need to amplify I believe that is the way to go.

Enjoy the guitar!

Barb, thanks so much for the advice! I haven't done much performing in quite a few years, but recently am getting back into it, in a very small way. I haven't quite decided, but may still call and see if I can change my order and add the pickup.

Lisa, thank you for your lovely welcome!

Tricia
P.S. I think the little guitar-playing emoticon is the cutest thing.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and change my order, and asked for a pickup to be installed. Have to say too that Joe at Blackbird Guitars is so nice and helpful. Now I just have to be patient for the next couple of months until the guitar arrives ...

Congrats from another Rider owner. I do think that there is a bit of sacrifice in tone, but its portability and durability far outweighs that negative. I think this is the ultimate travel guitar.

TokyoNeko, good to hear. I know I won't get the same sort of tone I get from my other guitars, but I couldn't bear the extremely poor sound quality that I heard in some of the little travel guitars (Backpacker and so on). It's unnerving to buy a guitar without playing it, but this one seems to be a good bet!

Yes, that's why I say "a bit." The only travel guitar I've played that sounds fuller than the Rider is the Voyage Air, but even with the folding neck, I find the whole package too bulky. The Rider's is nowhere near as "boxy" as most other travel guitars, and sounds bigger than many "full-size" parlors.

Does anyone know if the micarta fretboard on this guitar requires it to be humidified?

Here's a Wiki entry on "micarta." Like the rest of the instrument, the fretboard doesn't need humidification.
