Default “A Date Which Will Live in Infamy”

The date, December 7th, seems to have lost its importance in history.
Franklin Roosevelt responded to the attack on Pearl Harbor which included these words.

I don't know what you might think about this, but I'm saddened by what seems to be a casual attitude toward our country's history. ????????????

Of course historical events retain the same importance forever.

But time passes.
People who witnessed the event pass away.
It's understandable that the vivid impact of personal experience the event held for the survivors would gradually fade.
The event changes from something most lived through to something most learn about long after it's over.

The Viet Nam war too is transitioning to that.

Like Paul Simon wrote, "Time hurries on, and the leaves that are green turn to brown."

What happens is not bad, it's natural.

Its not a casual attitude..It is fading in the annals of time..9-11 for example...If you have a connection to December 7th you will light a candle, if you dont, it is now in the past..Sorry to say..Hats off to the greatest generation.

It gets hard to see the relevance of American history on the current times. It seems society hasn't learned a thing from it's history and believes that it's different now. Well things may be different but people are still people.

My cousin Joyce was born that exact day, December 7, 1941. I always remembered her birthday and her age

I stood on the Arizona Memorial and was humbled by those few moments it took to fathom the violence of that Sunday so many years before. My company of fellow servicemen silently read the names on the wall of the memorial.

This generation does not bother itself with the history their grandparents endured. They might respect it but they would have to know it first. My sons are very much aware of the roles their grandparents played. It's important to me they know every detail of the lives they led, the wars they helped fight and the sacrifices their generation made. I can do no more than that to preserve their memory. If they have children I hope they also remember to imbue them with the details of their lineage.

I think unfortunately war is a common place these days. Scary actually for the younger generation that think this is normal. 9/11 and is another one I think will come to pass with the younger generation as far as understanding the magnatude of what happened.
